Yule Altar

Yule Altar
Yule Altar- It is that time of rendezvous, magic is in the air, and a person is complete with Yuletide glee. Out from the attics and recipe books come the mope traditions. One of my penchant parts about this spice up is the decoration. The boughs of holly, and the wreaths of greens hung on the doors. And of course offer is the tree, annoying with lights and bracelets, with presents repeal. The stockings clogged with treats of the luminous Yule log. The Holly and the Oak King fight later than again on solstice eve. For example a thrilling scene to notice. But the hang-up outline of your home would be, regardless of cutback, your Yule Altar.

Clear guild luggage compartment what is personal as a wanderer altar, for the apparent seasons and partying. But regardless of what, or everywhere you are pustule it up, your Yule Altar atmosphere not be unbroken without pieces of evergreen and holly, be constructive your holly has colonize red berries, but shore up it out of the manage of children. Coverlet alter participate with a blissful cloth and conceivably some red, white or green candles.

If you can get them I vow plastic cup or crystal holders as the light atmosphere reflect extreme summit on your Yule Altar. As this atmosphere be the day we are celebrating the recovery of the Sun, as a consequence why not luggage compartment an image or a statue of the Sun set upon offer as well. Now as this is a time for presents why not set them on or next to the altar to bless them and colonize who atmosphere be treatment them. I atmosphere relationship a peculiar tradition of dig up, as it is the Celtic New See, to send out requests or charter go of bearing in mind regrets. Gradient your cauldron, put in some pine needles, angelica and some vex, to area off evil and award protection to your work and hostile some rasping alcohol in in the course of it. Any person can retrieve a not very pass by of paper and marker down your new kick diligence, or everything you wish to let go of and sprint it in vogue your lit cauldron.

I necessity make a clean breast Yule is my penchant time of rendezvous. The lights, the smells, the sounds are leader powerful than the rum bump Uncle Willie makes. It is the new rendezvous, the time we marked our decency for the gifts of support rendezvous and the ideal for the good gear to come in the nearest. So get started, Yule is like in vogue and magic is in the air.

Why You Must Write Bad Magic Reviews

Why You Must Write Bad Magic Reviews
"One of the reasons that Red Wheel/Weiser rejected my Operant Magick" was that they were concerned the material in the book was too advanced for a general audience. That is, they felt a rank beginner who knew nothing about ritual magick would be confused by some of the ideas presented therein. This is in fact probably the case, and I was very clear about it in the introduction to the book. I even recommended that rank beginners start with some sort of introductory book before moving on to mine, carefully explaining that the book did assume some level of familiarity with the concepts of ritual magick.

Personally, I have little interest in writing some sort of introduction to magick book with a whole chapter devoted to "IS MAGICK EVIL?" or other similar nonsense. Anybody who worries that magick might be evil and needs reassurance shouldn't practice it - such individuals are either too bound by religious conditioning to get much out of the discipline or are simply too stupid to comprehend many of the basic concepts that must be understood by any successful practitioner. An individual of the first sort might be able to practice magick successfully, but only after working through their conditioning loops and hopefully replacing them with more adaptive ones. An individual of the second sort is best off leaving magick alone entirely.

The idea that every book needs to be accessible to everyone, regardless of background, has resulted in an occult marketplace that is glutted with beginner-level material. Practitioners like myself have complained for years that there are no advanced or even intermediate level books being published on a regular basis. My goal in writing a more advanced book was to fill this gap. Certainly there must be enough serious practitioners in the world to support the sales of at least a few titles! Since all of the beginner titles are in competition with each other, it seems to me that you might be able to sell more books as the author of one of five available advanced books rather than one of five hundred available beginner books. Basic economics, that, but I was unable to convince the folks at Red Wheel/Weiser that this justified publishing the book. Perhaps they were really just worried about seeing book reviews like this one.

Some background - Frater Barrabbas is a friend of mine who recently published his second book, "MASTERING THE ART OF RITUAL MAGICK, VOLUME 1: FOUNDATION", an actual intermediate-to-advanced level title broken up into three volumes of which this is the first. As far as I can tell this reviewer picked up the book expecting it to be a beginner's guide, got all confused when, well, it wasn't, and proceeded to slam it on that basis.

What is needed is a clear, welcoming book that sets out the basic principles of ritual magic at the beginning, moving coherently through the most useful techniques such as breathwork, visualization, yoga, and the direction of energy, and giving plenty of practical exercises to do along the way. We need a sensible guide that leads you through safely, securely, and with a solid foundation in common sense understanding of why these things are as they are.

So is the reviewer's point that the hundreds of books in print covering this material from a beginner's perspective all suck? Every single one of them? I find that pretty hard to believe - I've come across at least a few that I consider decent for what they are. But unfortunately making a book "CLEAR" and "WELCOMING" often has the added effect of dumbing down the material.

This is everything that Mastering the Art of Ritual Magick is not.

But do we really need 501 beginner-level books rather than 500?

Never before have I emerged from a book on this subject so confused and alienated - even after reading Crowley!

As far as Aleister Crowley goes, I don't know what the reviewer found confusing but a lot of Crowley's stuff is not that difficult. You can actually train yourself to become a competent ritual magician with a copy of "LIBER O VEL MANUS ET SAGITTAE", all of 13 pages long in print, and the tables from "LIBER 777". There's more advanced material in his works, of course, but those two texts are really all you need to get started on your practices.

The title of this book, by Frater Barrabas

Note that the reviewer didn't even read the book closely enough to spell the author's name correctly. It's BARRABBAS.

suggests to the casual observer that it is a beginner's guide of some kind, or is the first in a series of books that will focus on giving the reader a solid foundation of practice, theory, and experience.

In fact, it isn't, as the quick Amazon search that the reviewer obviously neglected to do would have revealed. Frater Barrabbas' first book, "DISCIPLE'S GUIDE TO RITUAL MAGICK", is in fact the "BEGINNER BOOK" of the series. From the reviewer's comments and background it's clear that she should have started the series there.

However, I found this title extremely misleading as throughout the book Frater Barrabas writes about techniques and theories that he barely touches upon: they are briefly mentioned, almost like one might name-drop a famous author you know very little about but whose name sounds impressive in your work, but not discussed at any great length.

One might think that "MASTERING" in the title would suggest that the book is not for the "CASUAL OBSERVER," but to be fair the occult market is full of books with similar titles that promise all sorts of "MASTERY" and then open with yet another exposition of the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram. Furthermore, I would point out that much of the material "TOUCHED UPON" is (1) in the beginner book, which the reviewer clearly did not read, and (2) is mentioned briefly because if every technique mentioned in the book was given the full "BEGINNER BOOK" treatment the damn thing would be over a thousand pages long. Furthermore, toward the end of the review we find this comment:

Overall, Mastering the Art of Ritual Magick presents material that is not new (although Frater B. declares it to be in his Foreword, in which he also states that the material in the book was "TOO ADVANCED" to be published ten years ago...)

And yet the reviewer expects the book to be totally comprehensible to a beginner with no background in ritual magick? Or does the term "ADVANCED" not mean what she thinks it means? For the record, there is a fair amount of original material in the book, but perhaps the reviewer was too unfamiliar with the Golden Dawn/Crowley school of ritual magick to realize that. I found this comment telling as well:

For instance, the chapter entitled "RITUAL PERFORMANCE" looked promising, and I was hoping to read a thorough examination of how to make ritual look pretty, sound effective - the theatrics of magic. Indeed, Frater Barrabas mentions it briefly at the beginning of the chapter, but the rest of it is taken up by stuff that should have been discussed earlier in the work: ecstatic dance techniques (SHOULD HAVE ACCOMPANIED THE SECTION ON TRANCE), drawing lines of force, and circumambulations

Ritual magick is not psychodrama and it's not theater, despite some overlap between theatrical and magical methods. Way too many people in the occult community make that mistake. Magick is a technology that you use to produce specific results - change in conformity with will. It's not something that you put on for your friends so they can tell you how cool and magical you are. Combining the various energy-raising techniques and methods for drawing lines of force is exactly what "RITUAL PERFORMANCE" should consist of. It doesn't really matter how a ritual looks or sounds to an outside observer as long as it gets the job done.

So when I finally do get my book published, is putting up with bad reviews like this what I have to look forward to? Probably. Hopefully as more intermediate-to-advanced books become available reviewers will start to figure out that these books need to be reviewed by an expert in the field. I mean, this particular reviewer is a 24-year-old Pagan Tarot reader who practices Vodou. That gives her expertise in ritual magick how? You would never see anything similar going on with academic or scientific writing, and once we get past the "BEGINNERS ONLY" mindset of the major publishers I hope that the review process for magical writing will evolve along the same lines.

London Declaration On Anti Semitism A Glimpse Into Jewish Phobia

London Declaration On Anti Semitism A Glimpse Into Jewish Phobia

June 5, 2013 Gilad Atzmon

INTRODUCTION BY GILAD ATZMON: Below you will find the London Declaration on Antisemitism followed by a great analytical deconstruction by Stuart Littlewood.

The declaration doesn't leave much room for doubt, Israel and its Lobby are in a state of panic. The London Statement is a clear attempt to stop discussion on issues to do with Jewish past, the Holocaust, the Jewish State and its Jewish nature.

Interestingly enough, the declaration provides us with an insight into Zionist projection. Far from being a universal statement, the declaration is primarily concerned with anti-Jewish discrimination. The declaration is a brutal and crude attempt to interfere with freedom of expression that is still regarded by some as a precious human value.

The declaration is full with logical flaws. Here is one example. Though Israel defines itself as the Jewish State, the declaration calls to stop those who "target the State of Israel as a Jewish collectivity" (1). I guess that the meaning of it is simple. Israel is happy to define itself as a Jewish State but it doesn't like to be defined as such by others.

The declaration calls "national governments, parliaments, international institutions... to affirm democratic and human values, build societies based on respect and citizenship and combat any manifestations of antisemitism and discrimination." I would expect the Israeli Government to follow this call and to make sure that Israel, once and for all, becomes a 'state of its citizens' and succumb to principles of 'human values' and true democracy, because at the moment Israel is still a 'Jewish State' and its legal system discriminates non-Jews.

The declaration is an attempt to seal Jewish past "Governments must challenge any foreign leader, politician or public figure who denies, denigrates or trivialises the Holocaust" (3). It is obviously clear that some Jews don't like it when gentiles look into their past. But the question is why? Is there something secretive in Jewish past? The declaration also fails to define exactly what denial, denigration or trivialization may entail.

I guess that the desperate appeal to law and international community is taking place now because Israel and its supporters grasp that the tide has changed. -resentment towards Israel and its lobbies cannot be contained anymore.

I guess that Israel and its Lobby better learn to self-reflect rather than attempting to silence criticism.

The London Declaration on Combating Antisemitism, signed by some of the worlds leading parliamentarians, represents a new era in global cooperation in the fight against antisemitism.

Parliamentarians wishing to sign the declaration should click here

We, Representatives of our respective Parliaments from across the world, convening in London for the founding Conference and Summit of the Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Antisemitism, draw the democratic world's attention to the resurgence of antisemitism as a potent force in politics, international affairs and society.

We note the dramatic increase in recorded antisemitic hate crimes and attacks targeting Jewish persons and property, and Jewish religious, educational and communal institutions.

We are alarmed at the resurrection of the old language of prejudice and its modern manifestations in rhetoric and political action -against Jews, Jewish belief and practice and the State of Israel.

We are alarmed by Government-backed antisemitism in general, and state-backed genocidal antisemitism, in particular.

We, as Parliamentarians, affirm our commitment to a comprehensive programme of action to meet this challenge.

We call upon national governments, parliaments, international institutions, political and civic leaders, NGOs, and civil society to affirm democratic and human values, build societies based on respect and citizenship and combat any manifestations of antisemitism and discrimination.

1. PARLIAMENTARIANS shall expose, challenge, and isolate political actors who engage in hate against Jews and target the State of Israel as a Jewish collectivity;

2. PARLIAMENTARIANS should speak out against antisemitism and discrimination directed against any minority, and guard against equivocation, hesitation and justification in the face of expressions of hatred;

3. GOVERNMENTS must challenge any foreign leader, politician or public figure who denies, denigrates or trivialises the Holocaust and must encourage civil society to be vigilant to this phenomenon and to openly condemn it;

4. PARLIAMENTARIANS should campaign for their Government to uphold international commitments on combating antisemitism -including the OSCE Berlin Declaration and its eight main principles;

5. THE UN should reaffirm its call for every member state to commit itself to the principles laid out in the Holocaust Remembrance initiative including specific and targeted policies to eradicate Holocaust denial and trivialisation;

6. GOVERNMENTS AND THE UN should resolve that never again will the institutions of the international community and the dialogue of nation states be abused to try to establish any legitimacy for antisemitism, including the singling out of Israel for discriminatory treatment in the international arena, and we will never witness - or be party to -another gathering like the United Nations World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and other related Intolerances in Durban in 2001;

7. THE OSCE should encourage its member states to fulfil their commitments under the 2004 Berlin Declaration and to fully utilise programmes to combat antisemitism including the Law Enforcement programme LEOP;

8. THE EUROPEAN UNION, inter-state institutions, multilateral fora and religious communities must make a concerted effort to combat antisemitism and lead their members to adopt proven and best practice methods of countering antisemitism;

9. LEADERS OF ALL RELIGIOUS FAITHS should be called upon to use all the means possible to combat antisemitism and all types of discriminatory hostilities among believers and society at large;

* PARLIAMENTARIANS should legislate effective Hate Crime legislation recognising "hate aggravated crimes" and, where consistent with local legal standards, "incitement to hatred" offences and empower law enforcement agencies to convict;
* GOVERNMENTS that are signatories to the Hate Speech Protocol of the Council of Europe 'Convention on Cybercrime' (and the 'Additional Protocol to the Convention on cybercrime, concerning the criminalisation of acts of a racist and xenophobic nature committed through computer systems') should enact domestic enabling legislation;IDENTIFYING THE THREAT
* PARLIAMENTARIANS should return to their legislature, Parliament or Assembly and establish inquiry scrutiny panels that are tasked with determining the existing nature and state of antisemitism in their countries and developing recommendations for government and civil society action;
* PARLIAMENTARIANS should engage with their governments in order to measure the effectiveness of existing policies and mechanisms in place and to recommend proven and best practice methods of countering antisemitism;
* GOVERNMENTS should ensure they have publicly accessible incident reporting systems, and that statistics collected on antisemitism should be the subject of regular review and action by government and state prosecutors and that an adequate legislative framework is in place to tackle hate crime;
* GOVERNMENTS must expand the use of the EUMC 'Working Definition of antisemitism' to inform policy of national and international organisations and as a basis for training material for use by Criminal Justice Agencies;
* POLICE SERVICES should record allegations of hate crimes and incidents -including antisemitism -as routine part of reporting crimes;

* THE COUNCIL OF EUROPE should act efficiently for the full implementation of its 'Declaration and Programme for Education for Democratic Citizenship based on the Rights and Responsibilities of the Citizens', adopted on 7 May 1999 in Budapest;
* GOVERNMENTS should include a comprehensive training programme across the Criminal Justice System using programmes such as the LEOP programme;

* The Criminal Justice System should publicly notify local communities when antisemitic hate crimes are prosecuted by the courts to build community confidence in reporting and pursuing convictions through the Criminal Justice system;

* GOVERNMENTS should acknowledge the challenge and opportunity of the growing new forms of communication;
* MEDIA REGULATORY BODIES should utilise the EUMC 'Working Definition of antisemitism' to inform media standards;
* GOVERNMENTS should take appropriate and necessary action to prevent the broadcast of antisemitic programmes on satellite television channels, and to apply pressure on the host broadcast nation to take action to prevent the transmission of antisemitic programmes;
* THE OSCE should seek ways to coordinate the response of member states to combat the use of the internet to promote incitement to hatred;
* LAW ENFORCEMENT AUTHORITIES should use domestic "hate crime", "incitement to hatred" and other legislation as well as other means to mitigate and, where permissible, to prosecute "Hate on the Internet" where racist and antisemitic content is hosted, published and written;

* PARTICIPANTS will endeavour to maintain contact with fellow delegates through the working group framework, communicating successes or requesting further support where required;

So what exactly have they put their names to? The full document can be found HERE. It seeks to "draw the democratic world's attention to the resurgence of anti-Semitism as a potent force in politics, international affairs and society".

The authors of this one-sided treatise (the aforementioned Inter-parliamentary Coalition for Combating Anti-Semitism) want their 34 "commandments" enforced by all the big battalions - national governments, parliaments, international institutions, political and civic leaders, non-governmental organizations and civil society.

In the process, of course, efforts to expose the tightening noose of Zionism on those very same areas of politics, international affairs and society, will be stifled.

COMMANDMENT NO.1 states that "Parliamentarians shall expose, challenge, and isolate political actors who engage in hate against Jews and target the state of Israel as a Jewish collectivity".

Oh dear, how confusing. Here I was foolishly thinking the state of Israel was indeed some sort of Jewish collective since its founding document says:

"We, members of the People's Council, representatives of the Jewish community of Eretz Israel and of the Zionist movement hereby declare the establishment of a Jewish state in Eretz Israel,to be known as the State of Israel. The State of Israel will be open for Jewish immigration and for the Ingathering of the Exiles... We appral to the Jewish people throughout the diaspora to rally round the Jews of Eretz-Israel in the tasks of immigration and upbuilding..."

COMMANDMENT NO.6 states that "Governments and the UN should resolve that never again will the institutions of the international community and the dialogue of nation states be abused to try to establish any legitimacy for anti-Semitism, including the singling out of Israel for discriminatory treatment in the international arena..."

In other words, mustn't pick on, criticize or punish Israel for its horrendous crimes. It's an old tune.

COMMANDMENT NO.24 states that "Education authorities should ensure that freedom of speech is upheld within the law and to protect students and staff from illegal anti-Semitic discourse and a hostile environment in whatever form it takes including calls for boycotts".

But what exactly constitutes "illegal anti-Semitic discourse"? And is this an attempt to make boycotting illegal? Surely, that would be an infringement of personal and civil liberty.

COMMANDMENT NO.29 states that "Governments should take appropriate and necessary action to prevent the broadcast of antisemitic programmes on satellite television channels, and to apply pressure on the host broadcast nation to take action to prevent the transmission of antisemitic programmes."

The heavy hand of state censorship rides again.

There is good, sensible stuff in the declaration but it is laced with neurotic nonsense. The above are just a few examples. Readers will find more to annoy them when they see the full text, including its hectoring tone, and may feel the whole thing trespasses too far on their personal discretion and good sense.

To their credit two Australian Green MPs, John Kaye and David Shoebridge, have publicly refused to sign the declaration, saying that the document,

"wrongly conflates valid criticism of the state of Israel with anti-Semitism" and is "an unacceptable slander on those of us who speak up for the rights of the Palestinians. Criticism of the state of Israel... that is motivated by concern for a people dispossessed of their land, the consequences of a state that is founded on a religion or ethnicity or the actions of a government that ignores UN resolutions, is a valid contribution to public discourse."

They add: "It is a tragedy that the London Declaration is a flawed document. The fundamental intent - to combat and end irrational hatred against a people - is too important to be subverted by the political objectives of Zionism."

They further argue:

"When people of goodwill express their opposition to Israeli soldiers routinely humiliating Palestinians at checkpoints, the construction of an apartheid-style segregation wall through the West Bank or the brutal use of Israeli military force against civilians in Gaza, their motivation is not to denigrate the Jewish people but to highlight injustices perpetrated on the Palestinian people."

Is there a working definition of anti-Semitism? According to the European Forum on anti-Semitism,

"Anti-Semitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of anti-Semitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities."

For example....

Making mendacious, dehumanizing, demonizing or stereotypical allegations about Jews as such or the power of Jews as collective - such as, especially but not exclusively, the myth about a world Jewish conspiracy or of Jews controlling the media, economy, government or other societal institutions.

Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations.

Legitimate worries over dual loyalty are here to stay.

There's more to chew on in this part of the document:

Examples of the ways in which anti-Semitism manifests itself with regard to the state of Israel taking into account the overall context could include:

-Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g. by claiming that the existence of a state of Israel is a racist endeavour.

-Applying double standards by requiring of it a behaviour not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation.

-Using the symbols and images associated with classic anti-Semitism (e.g. claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis.

-Drawing comparisons of contemporary Israeli policy to that of the Nazis.

-Holding Jews collectively responsible for actions of the state of Israel. However, criticism of Israel similar to that leveled against any other country cannot be regarded as anti-Semitic.

Self-determination? The Israelis have denied the Palestinians their right to self-determination for decades and just recently opposed their moves towards statehood. And let's get this straight: critics require from Israel only the same standards of behaviour expected of other countries, i.e. conformity with international law, proper respect for humanitarian law and acceptable standards of justice. This is core.

Furthermore, the state of Israel is always welcome to demonstrate to the world that it is not a racist endeavour after all. Wanted: a declaration against irrational hatred of all kinds, not just anti-Semitism

So, are you entirely comfortable with these "commandments"? Would you brandish the blue pencil or eagerly sign up like those fine, thrusting parliamentarians in Australia and Canada - and Brown and Cameron?

What's the alternative? It seems to me that some Jews would do well to examine their own thoughts and deeds before pleading a special case. Tackling anti-Jewish hatred is a priority but not the only one. Hatred of non-Jews also needs to be curbed, and I'm thinking especially of the Israelis' Arab neighbours - Christian and Muslim - whose lands, homes and resources they have stolen, whose economy, wellbeing and livelihoods they daily trash, and whose freedom, security and dignity they have long denied. This hatred often spills over into cruelty, murder and other atrocities such as out-and-out military assaults and mass bombing of civilians and infrastructure essential to life.

So here's a suggestion for the promoters of both documents. Please delete the word "anti-Semitism" from the title and redraft to make it a fair and balanced undertaking against irrational hatred of all kinds.

That, hopefully, would earn universal support. Note the word "earn". Reasonable, sensible people won't be pushed and shoved.

It is astonishing how any self-respecting lawmaker could wholeheartedly subscribe to the declaration as it stands.

Is Your Prayer Life Lacking

Is Your Prayer Life Lacking
I have come to really enjoy my prayer time. I love spending time talking to the lover of my soul. It is no longer a chore or done out of a sense of obligation. It is done out of love and a longing to spend time with God. The change began to take place when I began to spend more time reading my Bible and realizing just how much I am loved! Without that time in God's Word, I would still be praying out of a sense of duty but it is because of the life His Word has breathed into me, I am now aware that my prayers are not said in vain but through Christ, are direct words shared with the Creator of the Universe!

The more time I spend soaking in His Word, the more I love to spend time talking to Him. It has opened up the line of communication between me and my Creator! It is abiding. As we read the Word, we become convicted of things in our lives we need to get rid of or surrender to God. As we shed these things and align our lives with His Word, our intimacy grows. Gone is the shame and separation that so often keep us from being able to boldly go before His throne. Through our faith in Christ, we know we can ask for forgiveness and be cleansed and renewed and move forward in what God has in store for us. The more we learn of Him, the more we long to be like Him!

Abiding is the secret to seeing our prayers answered. Why? Because when we abide in Christ, we no longer ask for things that are outside the will of God, not only for us but for others. As in any relationship, you must spend time getting to know another before you can really share anything of depth. You wouldn't share a deep hurt or wound with a complete stranger, or ask for their help if you didn't know them. You wouldn't feel you had the right to expect from them when you didn't know them and hadn't invested anything in a relationship with them. It is the same with our relationship with God. If we don't read His Word and learn of who He is and what He has done for us, than we really don't know how to approach Him. We may throw up an occasional prayer now and then but won't really spend the time with Him that we need to in order to cultivate intimacy.

If you are lacking a desire to pray, get back into the Word of God and reacquaint yourself with God and His awesome love for you that He willingly demonstrated through Jesus. Spending time in the Word of God will increase your faith and give you fresh revelation of who Jesus is and how much He loves you! As you begin to fathom just how great that love is, you will long to spend more time with Him in prayer, praying things in line with His will for you and others!

"If you want that splendid power in prayer, you must remain in loving, living, lasting, conscious, practical, abiding union with the Lord Jesus Christ." C.H. SPURGEON"

Discriminatory Firing Claim Dismissed Under Ministerial Exception Doctrine

Discriminatory Firing Claim Dismissed Under Ministerial Exception Doctrine
In "Conlon v. Intervarsity Christian Fellowship/ USA, "(WD MI, April 3, 2014), a Michigan federal district court applied the ministerial exception doctrine to dismiss a discrimination suit brought by a former spiritual director to Intervarsity Christian Fellowship staff members. Plaintiff Alyce Conlon, who was considering divorcing her husband, was placed on leave and ultimately fired under IVCF's Separating and Divorcing Staff Policy. She claims that she was treated differently than male staff members who divorced their spouses. The court said in part:

Plaintiff's suggestion that the ministerial exception applies only to those cases in which a court would be required to evaluate religious doctrine "misses the point of the ministerial exception," which is not to "safeguard a church's decision to fire a minister only when it is made for a religious reason. Hosana-Tabor", 132 S. Ct. at 709. Rather, the exception "ensures that the authority to select and control who will minister to the faithful-a matter strictly ecclesiastical-is the church's alone. Id." Thus, the ministerial exception prevents a court from evaluating the employment decisions of a religious organization regardless of whether the court would be required to delve into religious doctrine.

Walk In Newness Of Life

Walk In Newness Of Life
The fourth Article of Faith states: "We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost."

The Savior revealed the true method of baptism to the Prophet Joseph Smith, making clear that the ordinance must be performed by one having priesthood authority and that it must be done by immersion:

In Doctrine and Covenants 20:73-74 we are taught, "The person who is called of God and has authority from Jesus Christ to baptize, shall go down into the water with the person who has presented himself or herself for baptism, and shall say, calling him or her by name: Having been commissioned of Jesus Christ, I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Then shall he immerse him or her in the water, and come forth again out of the water".

The act of immersing a person in water is symbolic of that person's sinful life being buried and they being reborn or receiving a new life - a spiritual life - a life that is dedicated to serving God and others. Immersion is also symbolic of the death and resurrection of the Savior. In Romans 6:3-11 we read these words:

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been planted together in the likeness of his death, we shall be also in the likeness of his resurrection: Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin. Now if we be dead with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him: Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more; death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God. Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord.

I was born and raised as a Baptist. As such, the method of baptism by immersion was not a new concept to me. I had read the New Testament Gospel accounts of the baptism of Christ numerous times and I fully understood that being baptized by immersion was indeed following the example that the Savior had set before us when he was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River (See Matthew 3:13-17). I also understood the symbolism that Christ's baptism represents and teaches us. I also did not have a real issue with having to be baptized again because even growing up in the Baptist church, if I transferred from a church that was a part of one sect or convention to another; re-baptism was often required before membership would be accepted. What did concern me for some time was the ideal of having to be baptized by one who had proper authority. The question in my mind was. "Were not those who baptized me before authorized to do so?" It took a lot of soul searching, pondering the Scriptures, and prayer to finally come to terms with the matter.

I had no doubt in my mind that this is the Lord's true Church and that becoming a member of His Church was indeed the right thing to do. I also came to the realization that if I were to become a member of His Church I had to be willing to be obedient to the things which He has commanded and one of things which He commanded was that baptism was to be done by immersion and the ordinance must be performed by one having priesthood authority.

One of the things that really helped to settle a lot of questions and concerns in my mind was the fact that I made a commitment to read all of the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants and the Pearl of Great Price prior to being baptized. I had already read the Bible in its entirety several times and so I was very familiar with its teachings. As I read the Book of Mormon in particular I came across some verses in Mosiah 18 that really made me stop and think and helped me in making my decision to be baptized. In Mosiah 18:8-10 we read:

8 And it came to pass that he said unto them: Behold, here are the waters of Mormon (for thus were they called) and now, as ye are desirous to come into the fold of God, and to be called his people, and are willing to bear one another's burdens, that they may be light;

9 Yea, and are willing to mourn with those that mourn; yea, and comfort those that stand in need of comfort, and to stand as witnesses of God at all times and in all things, and in all places that ye may be in, even until death, that ye may be redeemed of God, and be numbered with those of the first resurrection, that ye may have eternal life-

10 Now I say unto you, if this be the desire of your hearts, what have you against being baptized in the name of the Lord, as a witness before him that ye have entered into a covenant with him, that ye will serve him and keep his commandments, that he may pour out his Spirit more abundantly upon you?

I further came to realize that if I were to become a member of His Church, I had to be willing to take His name upon me and be willing to follow His example because when we are baptized we enter into a covenant with God to take upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ, to keep His commandments, and to serve Him to the end (See Mosiah 18:8-10; Doctrine and Covenants 20:37). Each time that we partake of the Sacrament we renew the covenant that we made at baptism (See Doctrine and Covenants 20:77-79).

The question is asked in 2 Nephi 31:10, "Can we follow Jesus save we shall be willing to keep the commandments of the Father?" Verses 11 through 13 go on to say:

11 And the Father said: Repent ye, repent ye, and be baptized in the name of my Beloved Son.

12 And also, the voice of the Son came unto me, saying: He that is baptized in my name, to him will the Father give the Holy Ghost, like unto me; wherefore, follow me, and do the things which ye have seen me do.

13 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, I know that if ye shall follow the Son, with full purpose of heart, acting no hypocrisy and no deception before God, but with real intent, repenting of your sins, witnessing unto the Father that ye are willing to take upon you the name of Christ, by baptism-yea, by following your Lord and your Savior down into the water, according to his word, behold, then shall ye receive the Holy Ghost; yea, then cometh the baptism of fire and of the Holy Ghost; and then can ye speak with the tongue of angels, and shout praises unto the Holy One of Israel.

Sixteen years ago in the far away land of Iceland, where I was stationed in the Navy at the time, I made the decision to be baptized. That decision started me on a whole new path in my life. I am convinced that had the Lord not taken me out of the main stream of things and sent me to a place as far away as Iceland, things may have been a lot different in my life. My goals and my priorities were definitely a lot different than what the Lord had in mind. After being baptized and becoming more learned of the Gospel, and because of my willingness to take upon me His name, to follow His example, and to be obedient to His commands, I have seen and continue to see blessing after blessing in my life. Many doors that I once thought would never be opened to me are now beginning to open and I have been blessed in so many ways with new opportunities to help me grow and mature in the Gospel.

I believe that the words of President Joseph F. Smith best describe how I felt after being baptized. He said,

When I [was] baptized for the remission of my sins, the feeling that came upon me was that of pure peace, of love and of light. I felt in my soul that if I had sinned - and surely I was not without sin - that it had been forgiven me; that I was indeed cleansed from my sin; my heart was touched, and I felt that I would not injure the smallest insect beneath my feet. I felt as if I wanted to do good everywhere to everybody and to everything. I felt a newness of life, a newness of desire to do that which was right. There was not one particle of desire for evil left in my soul... this was the influence that came upon me, and I know that it was from God, and was and ever has been a living witness to me of my acceptance of the Lord." (CR, April 1898, p.66)

I testify that I know that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is true. I know that the Bible and the Book of Mormon are the Word of God. I know that God lives and that Jesus is the Christ. I know that Joseph Smith was and is a Prophet of the Lord. I know that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the Lord's true Church upon the earth today and that His Church is being led by a Living Prophet, President Thomas S. Monson. Of these things I do so testify and bear solemn witness in the Sacred name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus the Christ. Amen.

Keith Lionel Brown is a convert to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was baptized on 10 March 1998 in Reykjavik, Iceland while serving on active duty in the United States Navy in Keflavic, Iceland. He is the Founder and Editor-in-Chief of "Morsels Of Bread."

267 What Is The Essential Rite Of Confirmation Part 3 Continuation

267 What Is The Essential Rite Of Confirmation Part 3 Continuation

(Comp 267 repetition) The essential rite of Confirmation is the anointing with Sacred Chrism (oil mixed with balsam and consecrated by the bishop), which is done by the laying on of the hand of the minister who pronounces the sacramental words proper to the rite. In the West this anointing is done on the forehead of the baptized with the words, "Be sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit". In the Eastern Churches of the Byzantine rite this anointing is also done on other parts of the body with the words, "The seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit"."IN BRIEF" (CCC 1320) The essential rite of Confirmation is anointing the forehead of the baptized with sacred chrism (in the East other sense-organs as well), together with the laying on of the minister's hand and the words: "Accipe signaculum doni Spiritus Sancti" (Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.) in the Roman Rite, or "Signaculum doni Spiritus Sancti" [the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit] in the Byzantine rite. TO DEEPEN AND EXPLAIN (CCC 1298) When Confirmation is celebrated separately from Baptism, as is the case in the Roman Rite, the Liturgy of Confirmation begins with the renewal of baptismal promises and the profession of faith by the confirmands. This clearly shows that Confirmation follows Baptism (Cf. SC 71). When adults are baptized, they immediately receive Confirmation and participate in the Eucharist (Cf. CIC, can. 866). (CCC 1299) In the Roman Rite the bishop extends his hands over the whole group of the confirmands. Since the time of the apostles this gesture has signified the gift of the Spirit. The bishop invokes the outpouring of the Spirit in these words: All-powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your sons and daughters from sin and gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon them to be their helper and guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence. Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence. We ask this through Christ our Lord (OC 25). ON REFLECTION (CCC 1300) The "essential rite" of the sacrament follows. In the Latin rite, "the sacrament of Confirmation is conferred through the anointing with chrism on the forehead, which is done by the laying on of the hand, and through the words: "'Accipe signaculum doni Spiritus Sancti"' [Be sealed with the Gift of the Holy Spirit.]" (Paul VI, apostolic constitution, "Divinae consortium naturae", 663). In the Eastern Churches, after a prayer of epiclesis, the more significant parts of the body are anointed with myron: forehead, eyes, nose, ears, lips, chest, back, hands, and feet. Each anointing is accompanied by the formula: ("Signaculum doni Spiritus Sancti"): "the seal of the gift of the Holy Spirit" ("Rituale per le Chiese orientali di rito bizantino in lingua greca", (1954) 36). (CCC 1301) The sign of peace that concludes the rite of the sacrament signifies and demonstrates ecclesial communion with the bishop and with all the faithful (Cf. St. Hippolytus, "Trad. Ap". 21 SCh 11, 80-95). [END]

Why Mass Is Awesome

Why Mass Is Awesome

"I've always disliked fire-eating theologians, but incense is grand."

As a parish priest and a seminary mentor, I ride a fire-darting steed on roads showered with rose petals....well, not really...but I am often engaged in discussions about theology. This fact is pretty ironic because I have always disliked fire-eating theologians-especially Christian ones. My opinion of most theological debates is like that of a chicken for Kentucky Fried Chicken. I don't really care that it's extra crispy-spicy, it's bad for you and it usually ends up with someone getting cooked.

The needlessly complex, droning explanations contained in much of western theology are speculative at best, and more likely the product of Christian polemicists than the legitimate concerns of the average spiritual seeker or sagacious leader. In fact, it is often the ridiculous hair-splitting that turns off the laity, and rightfully so. Those who are called to the priesthood or other ministry, need to understand on a very basic level that throwing hundred-dollar words around an argument tends to worsen the climate, not provide clarity. I'm all for good use of vocabulary, but usually in matters religious, it is better to err on the side of simplicity and honesty.

This is not to say that I think that theology is unnecessary-quite the reverse-it seems to me to be of utmost importance for anyone who wishes to wear the stole, to come to terms with the ancient arguments and rationalities of our tradition and its predecessors. I look at the study of theology much as I do Drivers' Ed: you're learning not to hit other people and stay between the lines. Yield does not mean stop, and follow the rules concerning (liturgical) colors. But beyond knowing the glossary of theological terminology from adiaphora to Zeus, we need to understand, in a heartfelt way, the beauty and simplicity that a relationship with the Divine can mean in our daily lives.

"Theomachy is not a sushi roll wrapped in grape leaves"

Just because you know that theomachy is a war between the gods and not a sushi roll wrapped in grape leaves doesn't mean that you should be the caretaker of souls. Over the centuries, there have been far too many clever clergy and far too few loving and caring ones.

As I have mentioned before, there is much that we can learn from the basic principles that have served as a line of continuity from ancient times to the modern era. Now that more people have become aware of Gnosticism as an ancient way of approaching the Divine, they are thirsty for more ways of sparking up the Sacred Flame, to employ more tricks of the trade, as it were. That quest is perfectly normal and, if approached in a healthy, moderate and circumspect way, quite laudable.

"Do ut des" - "I give that you might give"

This is where the Church enters our spiritual scenario. Going to Mass isn't just an activity that brings us together with likeminded members of our community. It isn't essentially about the conviviality or the inspiring discussions that we share, although those are wonderfully nutritious for our spiritual paths. The act of religion itself is the thing that binds us together, and opens the reciprocal doors to our great and mysterious origins.

The ancient Roman term for this most basic religious principle is "do ut des" - "I give that you might give", and it presupposes an environment that depends on the right practices, prayers and rituals to be executed. This is the inner meaning of sacramentalism: we are not dependent on "right thinking" when it comes to dogma or doctrine; we are bound together in the communal sacrifice and sharing with the Divine. As the French sociologist Emile Durkheim put it: "do ut des" is "an exchange of mutually invigorating good deeds between the divinity and his faithful."

In a nutshell, if we count ourselves as Gnostic sacramentalists, we need not worry ourselves with the endless details and wild speculations of theologians. For Johannite Gnostics, we can learn how to walk toward unity by the ongoing experience of the Spirit through Gnosis and the celebration of the Sacraments which are not only the tools of our ancestors and the Communion of the Saints, but the means by which we fuel the Sacred Flame within each of us.

So, in short, if you have a local parish and you're looking for ways to properly improve your spiritual life, "go to Mass!"

Salvation, IT WELL HAVE BEEN WORTH IT TO ME. "Pass it on."

The Assurance of Salvation in the Bible

By Dr. John Ankerberg, Dr. John Weldon

Many Christians, by virtue of poor teaching, have no assurance or certainty of their own salvation. Because of this they reject the doctrine of eternal security (that the true believer in Christ can never lose his or her salvation).

But we believe that not only does God want us to know that we can have assurance of salvation in this life, but He also wants us to know that we will never be lost.1 When Christ paid the full penalty for our sins 2000 years ago, remember, all our sins were future at that point. If the Bible teaches our sins are forgiven at the point of true faith in Christ, this must logically include all of them, even all future sins. Thus, "He forgave us all our sins" (Col. 2:13). Therefore, come what may in life (please read Rom. 8:28-38), the person who trusts in Christ alone for salvation will go to heaven when he dies because God Himself informs the believer that he now possesses "an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade" because it is "kept in heaven for you" (1 Pet. 1:4). The salvation God offers is perfectly secure precisely because it involves a gracious act of God and is in no way dependent upon human merit or good works for its accomplishment. It is simply a free gift (Rom. 3:24)!

Because salvation occurs by God's grace and is in no way dependent upon anything we do to earn it, and because the divine penalty for all sin was fully paid by Jesus on the cross, the Bible teaches that those who have genuinely received Christ as their personal Savior may from that point forward be fully assured that they now possess eternal life. Again, consider the following Scriptures carefully:

I tell you the truth, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be condemned; he has crossed over from death to life (John 5:24, emphasis added).

I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life (John 6:47, emphasis added).

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life (1 John 5:13, emphasis added).

Again, these verses teach that God wants believers to know they now possess eternal life merely by their personal trust in Jesus. If any person now possesses eternal life, how can it be lost?

Unfortunately, the above Scriptures do not reflect the teachings of the cults which maintain that salvation is a provisional, lifelong process partially or wholly earned by a person's own works and individual merit.

Biblically, of course, salvation can be viewed as a process, but only in this manner: that sinless perfection and glorification are not received until after death. And so we struggle in this life to increase our sanctification and "work out" (Phil. 2:12), not work for, the logical consequences of our having already been saved and of having already received the gift of eternal life. Thus, biblically, true salvation-in the sense of our right standing before God and forgiveness of all sins-occurs at a point in time (the point of receiving Christ as personal Savior), even though the practical implications of salvation (progressive sanctification or growth in holiness) are worked out over a lifetime.

Thus, 1) complete reconciliation with God (full forgiveness of sins and cancellation of the penalty of sin); 2) regeneration (being made spiritually alive to God and the imparting of eternal life), and 3) justification (the crediting of Christ's full and complete righteousness to the believer) all occur in an instant, at the moment in time: the point of faith.

They are irrevocable since they are all gifts from God, and God says that He never takes back what He gives: "For God's gifts and his call are irrevocable" (Rom. 11:29). This includes God's calling to salvation and His election (Eph 1:4,5,11; Acts 13:48).

To summarize:

1. Salvation, or an eternally valid right standing before God, occurs solely due to the death of Christ (what Christ accomplished on the cross) entirely apart from works and personal righteousness (1 John 2:2; 1 Pet. 2:24; Rom. 10:13; John 14:6; Acts 4:12).

2. On the cross Jesus Christ paid in its entirety the full divine penalty for all sin (Heb. 10:12,14).

3. In terms of our standing before God, full salvation occurs at a point in time (1 Cor. 5:17-21; 1 Pet. 2:24). It is not a lifelong process that occurs or increases over time, which is sanctification.

4. Complete salvation is secured solely by personal faith-by trusting in Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins (John 1:12; Rom. 10:9,10; Eph. 2:8,9). Good works enter the picture only as a result-not a cause-of our salvation (Eph. 2:10; Rom. 12:1,2). Thus, good works are not even a partial cause of our salvation (Rom. 11:6; Gal. 3:13,21; 4:9,10; 5:1,4).

5. At the moment of saving faith a person is fully-not partially-justified (Rom. 3:28; 5:1). In other words, a person is declared righteous by God Himself-fully and finally. All his sins are forgiven and God declares him legally righteous (perfectly righteous in God's own eyes), even though he continues to remain a sinner because of the presence of a sinful nature (Rom. 3:28-4:6; Jas. 2:10; 3:2; 1 John 1:8-10). What this means is that in an instant of time a person has passed over from spiritual death to spiritual life, and that nothing else is required for him to go to heaven (see John 5:24). Once justified, a person can never lose her or his justification (see Rom. 8:30-38; 11:29).

6. At the moment of saving faith a person has also been regenerated-God has made him alive spiritually and imparted eternal life to him. Regeneration does not occur at the point of baptism or death; rather, it occurs at the point of saving faith. The fact that regeneration involves the imparting of eternal life underscores the finality of biblical salvation (John 6:47; 1 John 5:13).

7. Because a person now possesses eternal life, his salvation, as a result, can never be lost (Eph. 1:11-12; 1 Pet. 1:3-5). Such a person is eternally secure from the point of saving faith, regardless of his sins or his works (Rom. 8:28-38).

In conclusion, in the field of comparative religion, what the Bible teaches about salvation is truly revolutionary-eternal salvation, wholly by grace, as a free gift, is found nowhere else.
