But when I say "almost," it's because every now and again this "good cop bad cop" mechanism in her brain resets itself to what I like to call "bad to the bone mode."

What is it about karaoke anyway?

On the take it or leave it scale, most people will, assuredly, leave it.

However, there is a small, but fierce, pocket of the population, who - when in possession of a mike - cannot help but channel their inner Rod Stewarts or Shania Twains, and once started cannot usually be stopped.

Furthermore, give these people a few drinks, and their hidden entertainers not only come out, they will go into fierce competition with every other Karaoke Kamakaze in the room.

Because God help me people, I'm one of them.

Your average Karaoke lounge is as vicious and terrifying a place as any biker bar.

And probably more so because your garden variety crooner does not look particularly scary.

It was a Friday night not long ago around eight pm. I was sitting in the family room with the Pool Boy watching Ghost Whisperer when my phone rang.

The PB muttered something about not answering it, but he was too late - I got it on the second ring.

I hadn't heard from my friend in quite some time as she had been in church going mode for about three months.

Pretty much since her last stint at The Quaterway Pub's Friday night Karaoke where she brought the house down with an unforgettable rendition of "Hey There Little Red Riding Hood."

But the bad cop gene had kicked back in that friday night and she was raring to go.

To put it mildly, The Pool Boy was not impressed when I told him I was going out - and particularly when I told him with whom.

"For God's sakes," he bellowed from his chair, "You're already in your pyjamas. Call her back and tell her you can't go."

"I can't do that," I explained - my karaoke launch sequence had now been activated and was fast approaching defcon 5.

"She had a fight with her husband and needs my support."

The PB just rolled his eyes and went back to Jennifer Love Hewitt.

I met her at the lounge about an hour later, and by the time I got there, she was already in full blown kamakaze mode with four song choices and a duet already submitted to the dj.

But she was mad as a hatter.

Apparently that most nefarious of all large groups had come into the bar, The Wedding Party, and all present were sufficiently liquored up enough to want sing.

My friend was already onto her third Alabama Slammer by this time, and in response, had another on the way.

I'll go on record by saying that this is never a good sign with this particular church goer, and I decided to stick with Pepsi.

By last call, she was buying rounds for the bar and was up at the mike with one of the groomsmen singing "I've Got You Babe."

All I could think about was how much the night was going to cost her, and I knew there was going to be a long stretch of church following this one.

When the waitress brought the bill - and after I assured her for the 10th time, that I would, indeed, be driving - my friend went up to pay the tab on the bar's interac machine.

She was up there for quite some time, and when she finally came back to the table she looked frightened.

And for good reason.

Apparently she had forgotten her pin and punched in the wrong number sufficiently enough that her account had been frozen - leaving me with the 350.00 tab.

And let me just say,

The 350.00 bar tab was not fun to explain next month when the Mastercard bill came in...


I loaded her into my car.

And though I may not have mentioned it before, she is not the smallest woman in the world.

Which to me is neither here nor there except that it took a fair amount of hoisting and maneuvering to get her adequately belted and situated.

But when I did, I drove her to my house where the plan was that she would sleep it off.

I was going to drive her to the bank and back to her car in the morning.

Best laid plans and all that.

It was about 2 am when we pulled into my driveway.

To her credit, she managed to get out and halfway up my front walk before the urge to vomit hit.

She hit the deck somewhere in the vicinity of my azalea bushes.

But the ensuing problem became one of gravity.

What went down, did not, unfortunately, want to come back up.

And half passed out by this point, I couldn't get her off my front walk.

The fear of God was in me as I imagined the scene if the Pool Boy woke up and found us out there.

So I tried to hoist her.

First from the front, and then from behind.

It was no use.

The woman had fallen and she wasn't getting up.

Just as I was coming to terms with the fact that I was going to have to wake the Poolboy - afterall, I could hardly leave her lying in my front yard all night - a group of young 20 something guys drove by, spotted us, and came to my assistance.

The first few tries to get her up were nothing short of disastrous.

But it was on try number three that, what is referred to today as The Incident, occurred.

Two guys were hoisting from the front, while a third brought up the rear and pushed from behind.

We're not sure how it happened, but in the next moment, the elastic waist band on her slacks gave way, and before the young man in the back could sufficiently avert his eyes, it was Full Moon over Memphis.

To his everlasting credit, though, after he recovered, the young man continued.

It took all three of them, with me directing traffic.

But we managed to get her into the house, onto the couch, and snoring before Pool Boy was any the wiser.

As a thought experiment, I imagined St. Paul and St. Ignatius writing these words to a modern Fundamentalist Church. I took a real-life example from the Kansas City area - Providence Independent Baptist Church (PIBC). I chose them simply because they've got a confession of faith which directly addresses their view of the Church, and which I could contrast with the writings of Paul and Ignatius. Their confession reads in part:

We hold that the local church has the absolute right of self-government free from the interference of any hierarchy of individuals or organizations (Matthew 18:15-17; Acts 6:3-6; 13:1-3; 14:26, 27; I Corinthians 5:1-5, 12, 13; 6:1-6; Revelation 2-3); that its one and only Head is Christ (Ephesians 1:22-23; Colossians 1:18); that it is Scriptural for true churches to cooperate with each other in contending for the faith and for the furtherance of the Gospel (Acts 15:1-35); that each local church is the sole judge of the measure and method of its cooperation; that on all matters of membership, of polity, of government, of discipline, and of benevolence, the will of the local church is final.I'll note at the outset that PIBC didn't pen this creed "confession of faith." I talked with the pastor, Victor Mowery, who notes: "You do need to be aware that the wording of our confession is not original to us," and while he made clear he stood behind the content, he notes that the exact same wording could be found in the confessions of entire "groups "of churchs from the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches (http://www.garbc.org/) or the Baptist Bible Fellowship International (http://www.bbfi.org/). I should also note that he felt that this post was inaccurate (I sent him an earlier version), saying, "it is clear to me that our interpretation of those scriptures is not clear to you, and that is understandable. We simply cited in them in support of the statement, without elaborating on how exactly they support it." I followed up with him in late August, and he still hasn't elaborated as to what, exactly, is being misrepresented. So if you see me saying anything about how PIBC interprets a given passage, take it with a grain of salt. I don't really intend to do that, though: my goal is only to show why I think none of these passages are helpful for proving local church supremacy.

(A) 1 CORINTHIANS 5:1-15

To begin with, I find it ironic that they use 1 Corinthians 5:1-5 as support for their claim. In it, St. Paul chastises the church at Corinth for not taking action against an unrepentant fornicator, and orders them to condemn him when they next gather together. The NIV reads, "When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus and I am with you in spirit, and the power of our Lord Jesus is present, hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord." The KJV says the same thing less clearly: "In the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, when ye are gathered together, and my spirit, with the power of our Lord Jesus Christ, to deliver such an one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus." So the local church wasn't doing the right thing, then Paul (an outsider from Tarsus, and not a member of the church at Corinth) condemns their inaction and orders action. And from this, they derive... the local church is free from all external individual and organizational interference? This IS individual and organizational interference! Left to their own devices, Corinth would have done nothing. Even more astounding, Paul is interfering on an issue of membership - ordering them to excommunicate a member of the local church - an issue which Providence Independence Baptist claims in its confession is exclusively the province of the local church.

1 Corinthians 5:12-13 means the global Church, not the local church. Reading "local church" would be nonsensical, since it would mean that Paul couldn't judge anyone other than those within the "Corinthian "church... even though Paul wasn't a member of the Corinthian church himself. More importantly, anyone reading Galatians (or any of his other letters) will see that Paul does judge the causes of Christians far afield from Corinth. Instead, Paul is teaching that there are some who seem to be condemned by being outside of the visible Church, but which God may yet save.

(B) MATTHEW 18:15-18

This passage speaks of the authority of the Church over the individual. If each congregation acts as its own Church, and can render contrary decisions subject to no one, the Church "has" no authority -- believers can just attend the Independent Baptist church down the street. So Matthew 18 means the local church only in the sense of it being part of a larger Church, which is why the chapter is Jesus talking to the hierarchy, the Twelve, not to all of His followers.

This is an important point, and easy to miss. Protestants are in no real sense bound to, or in submission to, the Church (or even, "A "church). Certainly, some will submit to whatever their local congregation says, but according to the eclessiology of Protestantism (one of the few issues on which a sweeping, "Protestants believe this" statement might be appropriate), if you don't like your church, or you think it's doing something wrong, you can leave. No visible church is necessary for the salvation process. If that's true, Matthew 18:15-17's vision of eclessial authority is without effect.

(C) ACTS 6:1-6

In Acts 6:1-6 (Providence Independence Baptist omitted the vitally important first two verses), the Twelve (again, the hierarchy) gather all of the other disciples, and gave these disciples the ability to choose their own deacons. What happens next is vital, though: they then brought these deacons to the Twelve, who then laid hands, ordaining them. Both the fact that the local church had to rely on the Twelve for permission to choose deacons, and the fact that the deacons were still ordained by the Twelve, refute, not support, the idea that the local church is autonomous.

(D) ACTS 13 AND ACTS 14:26-27

These passages both deal with the commission of Paul and Barnabas, and it's actually sort of striking - Paul is an Apostle, but still must be sent by the Church. The leaders of the church at Antioch are told by the Holy Spirit to set apart Paul and Barnabas, so they lay hands on them and send them. But Paul and Barnabas are still sent by the entire Church... or else, it's the church at Antioch telling the Corinthians, Ephesians, Colossians, Romans, etc., what to do. So again, this is the local church as part of a Catholic Church, or it makes no sense. Read this within the broader call of Paul's call and mission and you'll see what I mean. If he's just an emissary of the Antiochian church, Antioch is trying to control the global church (which, of course, PIBC rightly says they can't). This passage correctly establishes that the local church can act as a tribunal. Nobody refutes that. But where it says only the local church can act as a tribunal, I just don't see. After all, Acts 15 shows a global Church Council, capable of passing judgment on moral issues, binding upon all the churches. Besides, any tribunal's judgment is only valid if it can be enforced. Within the secular court system, local courts must enforce other local courts' judgments (full faith and credit clause for between states, extradition treaties for those outside the US, etc.). If they didn't, law enforcement would totally fail. If you could avoid a guilty verdict by simply stepping into another jurisdiction, it'd be virtually impossible to have any rule of law. So again, this only makes sense if the local church is part of a universal Church.

That's why, going back to the point I made in (B), the Protestant vision of the Church renders these passages null.


Revelation 2-3 deals with the fidelity of different local churches. Interestingly, all seven churches in question were all geographically close to one another. The prevailing view is that these are the seven churches under the Apostle John's authority, as he served as their first Apostle-bishop. Nowhere is there even a hint of them being the highest authority. I can say, for example, that a given Catholic parish in Kansas City is very devout and another is very lax. Does that mean there's no bishop? Of course not.


So the Scriptures PIBC think support their position just don't -- at least two, in fact, refute their position (1 Corinthians 5:1-5 and Acts 6:1-6), while at least four more (Matthew 18, Acts 13-14, 1 Corinthians 5:12-13, and 1 Corinthians 6:1-6) are sensible only if the opposite is true. The final proof text, Revelation 2-3, likely hints at the authority of the Apostle John as bishop over seven different churches, but really doesn't say anything doctrinally on the authority of local churches at all. Again, they may have some novel interpretation of what this ought to look like, but my point is just that no, whatever PIBC and anyone else might think, that's not what the passages mean, objectively.


Now consider Colossians 4:16. To be consistent, Providence Independent Baptist would have to condemn both Paul and the Church at Colossae for meddling in the internal affairs of the Laodicean church, and condemn Paul for meddling even within the affairs of the Colossian church, since they're not part of Antioch or Corinth. They'd also have to condemn Ignatius of Antioch for interfering in the affairs of the Trallian church. As for what Ignatius actually writes, well, it contradicts what they teach quite plainly - their mission statement says of the local church:

... its two offices are that of pastor and deacon, whose qualifications and duties are clearly defined in the Scriptures (Acts 20:26-31; I Timothy 3:1-13; II Timothy 4:1-2; Titus 1:6-9; I Peter 5:1-4).Ignatius was teaching that there were three offices: bishop, presbyter, deacon. And given that Ignatius taught that apart from these offices, there is no Church, these are pretty important details to get wrong. T. S. Eliot actually omitted the most striking thing Ignatius says, but it's immediately before the second he quoted:

For, since you are subject to the bishop as to Jesus Christ, you appear to me to live not after the manner of men, but according to Jesus Christ, who died for us, in order, by believing in His death, you may escape from death. It is therefore necessary that, as you indeed do, so without the bishop you should do nothing, but should also be subject to the presbytery, as to the apostle of Jesus Christ, who is our hope, in whom, if we live, we shall [at last] be found. It is fitting also that the deacons, as being [the ministers] of the mysteries of Jesus Christ, should in every respect be pleasing to all. For they are not ministers of meat and drink, but servants of the Church of God. They are bound, therefore, to avoid all grounds of accusation [against them], as they would do fire.So the bishop isn't just somebody you choose for yourself. He's someone with real authority over you, like it or not. Ignatius also makes it clear the hierarchy: bishop is above presbyter, who is above deacon. And without the bishop, you should do nothing. In contrast, Providence Independence claims that the "one and only" head of the local church is Jesus Christ.


Obviously, there's much more in the way of Scriptural and Patristic support which refutes the notion that the local church is the highest authority. These ones I chose just because Eliot referenced them, and I think they're sufficient to prove my point. To be clear, my point in all of this isn't to pick on Providence Independent Baptist Church. I know they mean well, and I am quite confident they're helping lead souls to Christ and salvation. I imagine that their errors are innocently made. Nevertheless, I think they're gravely in error on a number of points of doctrine, and I think it's worth refuting the myth that the early Church was a disorganized place, or a place organized only at the local level. Rather, this was an interconnected network of churches bound by the same confession of faith. Everything we know from Scripture and from the writings of the Early Church Fathers support this notion time and time and time again.

Many years ago, a young man used to speak briefly to our congregation on a Sunday morning. He did so from a twisted, sitting position that arthritis had frozen his body into. He could not have stood if his life had depended on it.

And I would suggest that there are those who have arthritis of the soul. Their morality and their belief system so twisted out of shape they could not stand strong and tall above the crowd if they had to.

They have wavered and turned before whatever wind was blowing for so long they stand for nothing while standing for anything. They have cut their consciences to fit whatever is the fashion of the day.

They do not have a moral backbone like the Grand Dame of playwrights Lillian Hellman. When it was not at first the popular stand, she stood up against the Senator McCarthy's witch-hunting committee on communism in the movie industry and refused to testify. She decided he was fishing without enough bait.

Decided that, yes, there were communists and that communism was bad but not everyone he was trying to incriminate was a communist. And so courageously she spelled out her reason, "I will not cut my conscience to fit the year's fashion." Finally, she was proven right, but for a time she stood alone.







This book is more than just a march down memory lane. It is certainly not a search-and-destroy mission as are some historical efforts. It is really a questing for an understanding of the man able to write, "He has the right to criticize who has the heart to help. Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them? It is the duty of all nations as well as of men to owe their dependence upon the over ruling power of God."1 "With malice toward none; with charity toward all; right, as God gives us to see the right..."2

When a president continues to think and speak this way, often commenting on sin and mercy more like a preacher than a politician it is worth taking a second look. When he called out for, "with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right," 2 he did not just show humility. Rather he asked for a national self-examination and that God might be at the center of such evaluation.

Tommy Dean Elliff
TULIA - Tommy Dean Elliff, 60, a former resident of Tulia, died
Friday, Aug. 20, 1999, in Rockwall.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Wallace Funeral Home Chapel with
the Rev. Charles Davenport, pastor of First Baptist Church,
officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery by Wallace Funeral

Mr. Elliff was born in Rotan and moved to Tulia when he was a boy.
While in Tulia, he attended schools, worked at the Mid-Plains Body
Shop and served in the National Guard and the Army Reserves. In 1982
he moved to Rockwall, where he owned and operated the Carousel
Collision Center and was a member of the First Baptist Church.

He married Regina Geraldine Wiess, his former wife, in 1963.

Survivors include a daughter, Stacy Hansen of Sunrise Beach, Mo.; a
son, Kent Elliff of Lucas; a half brother, H. Don Elliff of
Midlothian; a half sister, Joyce Deal of Midlothian; and three

HEREFORD - Oleeta Smith, 88, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999.

Gardens Cemetery in Clovis, N.M. Arrangements are by Parkside Chapel
Funeral Home.

Mrs. Smith was born in Mangum, Okla. She graduated from Clovis High
School in 1930. In Clovis, she was the co-owner and operator of Barry
Hardware Store from 1942 until 1972 and was a member of First United
Methodist Church and the Women's Society of Christian Service. She
moved to Hereford 15 years ago.

She married Frank M. Smith in 1938 at Fort Sumner, N.M. He died in

Mrs. Moreno was born in Pleasanton and attended schools there. She
moved to Hereford 45 years ago from Lorenzo and was a security guard
for Holly Sugar for many years. She was a member of Iglesia de San
Jose Catholic Church and a volunteer for the Guadalupana Catholic
women's organization.

Survivors include two sons, Ricky Moreno of Grand Prairie and Jimmy
Adam Moreno of Arlington; five daughters, Lucinda Moreno and Sally
Moreno, both of Hereford, Diana Moreno and Deana Flores, both of Grand

GROOM - Michael G. Loner, 42, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999.

DIMMITT - Julian Rojoas Acevedo Sr., 71, died Friday, Aug. 20, 1999.

Mr. Acevedo was born in Bartram and moved to Dimmitt in 1956 from
Georgetown. He owned A&F Welding and built gins in Texas, New Mexico

Church, Sacred Heart Association and was Cursillista.

He married Edith Rollins in 1947 at Rio Grande City. She died in 1995.

He married Martha Kellerman in 1943 at West Los Angeles.

Phalba L. Smith
Phalba L. Smith, 84, of Amarillo, died Thursday, Aug. 19, 1999.

Services were at 3 p.m. Saturday in Polk Street United Methodist
Church with the Rev. James Garrett officiating. Burial was in
Panhandle Cemetery at Panhandle by Minton/Chatwell Funeral Directors
of Panhandle.

Mrs. Smith was born in Howe. In 1939, she moved to Panhandle, where
she was a member of the Erudite Club. In 1963, she moved to Amarillo,

N.M., officiating. Burial was in the family plot of the Tucumcari
Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Ward was born in Post, Texas, and had lived in Tucumcari since
1922. In Tucumcari, she attended schools, was a school bus driver for
the Tucumcari Public School System and, with her family, owned and
operated the Ward Sand and Gravel Co. She was a member of Primitive
Baptist Church and was active in the Tabosa Extension Club.

Survivors include a son, Wayne Ward of Ruidoso; two daughters, Doris
Ward of Albuquerque and Evelyn Mayfield of Lucadia, Calif.; a sister,
Ruth Miller of Tucumcari; a brother, Bill Tatum of New Kirk; six
grandchildren; and four greatgrandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben, in 1977 and two sons,
Jerry Ward and Art Ward.

Mr. Sorge was born in Winnsboro, Texas, and was a longtime resident of
Tucumcari before moving to Mineola several years ago. In Tucumcari, he
was the owner and operator of the Morning Glory Grocery Store for many
years, and was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church and Masonic
Lodge AF&AM Post 27.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Willie Mae, and by a son,
Joe H. Sorge.

Survivors include his wife, Fay; a son, Jack Sorge of Mill Creek,
Wash.; a brother, Bruce Sorge of Orange, Texas; two sisters, Buna
Rogers and Ruby Caldwell, both of Winnsboro, Texas; and numerous

What holds all G'omez's disparate observations together is the persona he assumed: the reactionary. From the outset, then, it is clear that G'omez is a political thinker, and a deeply unfashionable one at that. In order to truly understand G'omez's critique of modernity, however, one must first grasp that the heart of his message is not political, but religious. G'omez's key insight is that democracy is "an anthropotheist religion." Modern man has made himself into his own god by denying the most foundational truth of all: "to depend on God is the being's being." Denying our dependence on the Creator, however, led directly to the 20th century's dystopias. "The proclamation of our autonomy is the founding charter of hell. Hell is any place from which God is absent." Modern man, though, has tried to eliminate the feeling of alienation by resorting to revolution, technology, and immorality. But all these solutions only make the problem worse, as history has shown.

All this makes G'omez sound like an Old Testament prophet pronouncing God's judgment on a stubborn and sinful people. It is certainly true that he chastises modern man for his lack of faith. Many of his aphorisms can be read as an extended reflection on the first commandment of the Decalogue. Yet there is much more to the "Escolios" than condemnation of unbelief. G'omez certainly did not expect to exercise a wide influence; at most he hoped to be instrumental in bringing about a few individual conversions. And for him one of the most important ways to bring someone to acknowledge his dependence was to encourage a reverence for beauty. Beauty, according to G'omez's axiology and epistemology, is a value whose existence depends on nothing in us and which we can never deserve. Beauty is like a light that blinds us at first, but later we see the world in a new way because of it; even a great artist cannot completely control the beauty that inheres in his work of art through his techniques. Beauty is a grace.

As G'omez explained in one of his few short essays, "The Authentic Reactionary," the reactionary searches history and his own life for values like beauty. For instance, in many aphorisms he speaks of the beauty of a smile. In other aphorisms he discusses all aspects of love. His passion for literature is a search for the values that artists make perceptible to readers.

Perhaps most importantly for a reactionary in a world surrounded by enemies, however, G'omez teaches us to cultivate the virtue of hope. "The reactionary escapes the slavery of history because he pursues in the human wilderness the trace of divine footsteps." G'omez exhorts us not to seek a solution to man's problems in history, but rather to live those problems "at a higher level." Yet he also reminds us that "Christianity does not teach that the problem is solved, but that the prayer is answered." In the end, he offers us the consolation that "in history it is wise to hope for miracles and absurd to trust in plans." This may seem like meager consolation to some, but for G'omez it was the most extravagant promise imaginable: "The Christian knows that he can claim nothing, but can hope for everything."

This brief sketch fails to do justice to the richness and complexity of G'omez's "Escolios".
