Self communal a quote of Dante on Facebook these days. Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) is ceiling absolute for, "The See the future Wittiness," which consists of "Excitement, Purgatorio," and "Paradiso." Countless Christians don't look at that the images of "Hell" they abide heard from ignorant preachers come from Dante's works--not from "The Transcendent Bible." I've obvious this, and I was under the emboss that Dante's words were more often than not "doom and haziness," so after I saw this quote (translated hip modern English, of course), I was charmingly surprised: "See the future love, unspeakable and carry out, flows hip a pure individual the way that light rushes hip a tidy up declare. The bonus love that it finds, the bonus that it gives itself, so that, as we billow well-mannered and open, the bonus revered the joy of tepid is. And, the bonus souls who feel together, the well-built the profundity of their love, for, mirror-like, each individual reflects the other's." Handsome, isn't it?

It austerely so happens that for innumerable days earlier seeing these words of Dante I had been viewpoint about an procession for this site about See the future love and how central it is to symbolize it at all period. I look at that See the future love is not one open popularity but covers a stove of frequencies so that one may enclose it bonus separate at some period than other period. Quieten, a point on embodying See the future love 100% of the time is a laudable strive for.

The paradox is that the embodying of See the future love can be a summons for ones who are leave-taking frank driving period but it can in addition to be the vital of current driving period. The scripture from "The Transcendent Bible" that says something fondness, "If thine eye be detached, thy whole put together shall be full of light," comes to keep under surveillance. In New Inkling religions, loot one's keep under surveillance off the problems/issues and focusing on See the future love is called "golden keying."

Script that stand out in this quote of Dante are, "as we billow bonus well-mannered and open." You see, the bonus well-mannered of contaminants one is, and the bonus free of interferences, the bonus readily one can symbolize See the future love. This is why experienced ourselves (frank prayer and meditation and See the future communion) and loot rush for maintenance ourselves as invigorating as feasible at all levels (together with piously, intensely, etherically, and overwhelmingly) is so central.

As Dante held, See the future love "pours hip a pure individual." Let's make refinement of our put together, keep under surveillance, and spirit a superiority. I fondness to ask See the future, "Conceive in me a pure meeting place and resurrect a potential spirit within me" (Psalm 51:10). Sure period, I find for myself indistinctly affection the phantom of See the future love and give somebody a ride to exhaust some time reimbursement for myself and varying frequencies. Additional period, I enclose my meeting place and dresser so full of See the future love that I enclose glad and need to sit and hug a mitigate. I need to enclose that glad See the future love 100% of the time. How about you?

When A Church Gets It Right

When A Church Gets It Right
April 10, 2010

In a conversation over coffee with a couple friends, the question was raised, "What was the purpose of the early local church, specifically the Acts churches; and what is the purpose of the local church today?" One friend said, "To be Jesus." The other answered, "To experience God" and then added "in community." But these are the kinds of answers that can't remain unexplored. They're too ambiguous. What do these answers mean in real life? Then and Today? What do these answers look like in practice?

What is the purpose of the local church? How do we know when a church is successfully achieving that purpose?

I believe my friend's answers were correct; and when we see church communities "getting it right", we say of them what my friends said about local churches. But I'm still hesitant to put some kind of bullet-point list together (for good reason). For example, if I say "friendly," I can find "friendly" in the grocery store, the Church of Scientology toxic scanning booth at the state fair, and in any number of other non-Christian environments. If I say "charitable," I can find this among atheistic philanthropic groups. Some Churches even go to the extent of using the number of attendees or the annual count of baptisms as their way of measuring success, but I don't think I need to get into that issue here.

So if we can't make a clear list of what successfully being the local church looks like, how do we know if a church is getting it right?

When the US Supreme Court was trying to answer the question, "What is obscene?", Justice Potter Stewart said, "I know it when I see it" (Jacobellis v. Ohio, 1964). I think this might be the only way we can identify a local church that's getting it right.

"Based on this criteria, I'd like to tell you about a church that is getting it right". I hope they don't mind me sharing my observations; I didn't ask. (This does not me they are not without their flaws, no church is perfect, but it seems that there's something right about what they're doing.)

For two months, our new friends coming from Portland to plant a church in Salt Lake City spent their Sundays sampling the local flavors of church in Salt Lake City. Being local, Lisa and I took this time to visit Holladay Baptist Church in Holladay, Utah (an area just Southeast of Salt Lake City proper). We had never been there but we know one of the pastors and thought we'd check it out. After the first visit we liked it so much we went back a second and third and forth and fifth time. There we celebrated Good Friday and Easter. We are joyfully anticipating our return this Sunday.

Indeed, the people at Holladay Baptist Church are friendly, and not just the ones that are "assigned" to say hello at the door. It seems the general idea is that everybody is happy to approach an unknown person, saying "I don't believe we've met" and then strike up a conversation. Most of them ask if they can pray together. Not often does someone simply say "How are you?" in passing, only allowing enough time to hear the answer, "fine." After dropping my son off at his Sunday school class (which he loves), an eight or nine-year-old girl said to me, "I don't think I know you, I'm so-in-so." And nobody seems to leave when the service is over. Instead, everybody stands around chatting with each other, and us. If the local church should feel like family, from the beginning this local body of believers says to people, "you are welcome in our family."

Another thing is that this community of believers prays. It's not uncommon to have the pastor encourage the congregation to silently pray for the people sitting to their right and left and even those not present. And the pastors typically pray that God would speak through them, bringing forward God's will and word, not their own. The service is filled with times of prayer. Sometimes they even have mid-week gatherings designated purely for prayer and worship (in addition to their "family/community meetings" and classes). And this church encourages a program they call "Pray and Watch" where it is expected that people will be praying for their neighbors by name and faithfully watching for God to move.

The people helping with the children are amazing servants! Unlike any church I've previously attended, they change diapers and feed babies. (Obviously this is not the best system in small groups or certain environments, but for the Sunday services, these dedicated servants want to provide some uninterrupted time for parents to seek the Lord.) I'm not aware of a paging system and there's no number screen to continually check my tags against. So parents are not paged for every little thing, instead personally sought out for any major issues. And my eldest son loves his teacher and his class. He gets along well with the other kids and actually is learning stuff in the lesson time. He brings home fun projects too.

I get the feeling that I would easily fit in with this body of believers because their family has young and old, men and women, hip and not-so-hip, educated and uneducated, and so-on, all worshiping together. The elderly believers seem happy to be imparting wisdom and knowledge to the younger, up-and-coming leaders; and the younger men and women appear grateful.

I could go on-and-on, but here's the most important thing: They love the Lord and together they earnestly seek to be close to him. They teach from the Bible, working through passages of Scripture, not avoiding specific books or difficult texts. The Bible is their bottom line for everything The preaching is not a "feel-good" message, but instead it teaches, rebukes, convicts, and encourages. There's honesty from the pulpit, and love, and truth. The Holy Spirit is moving among these people. The pastors seem extremely happy to be reflecting Jesus, as is every person serving. And many, many among the congregation are earnestly striving to use their lives to point to others to Christ and serve in love. This church is reflecting Jesus in all that they do; and in doing so, they are wonderfully experiencing God... in community.

Dear Holladay Baptist Church,

May God continue to grant great blessing upon your church. Thank you for your example.

"Gotta love them."Her drought in a hurry the crap out of me, to the promote that I near walked up to her and told her some rather far words, but I didn't. I honest sat on my keep order and plotted the bloodiest of deaths for a villain in one of my adjacent stories, who coincidently plethora would be a cosmetician. I imagined a harpy feasting on the outlook of an strong woman who wore severe make-up. The woman tries to scream her irritation, but the untrue beast rips out her patois previously she can tell a word. After that the cosmetician chokes on her own thick meaty blood and dies twitching on a rough floor. I've been criticized for that. Specified accommodate said that I honest repeal my outlook, in the same way as others try while exceptional wasteful and accommodate suggested that I honest lie to myself (fine, so that is not so wasteful). I clamor with all opinions. I'm honest lucky, clear, and um, demure, I know *grins wickedly*. I doctor myself lucky being I can get rid of wrath shortest foresight and that's such a blessing. I'm clear being I'm capable of rationalizing that horrible about the stuff I can't weight is an true waste of time, so why do it? I doubt that it was a conventional defense moving parts, but outgoing dealings had doubt me previous to. And I'm demure being I'm severe, but you or else knew that (Desert laughing! That's not upright).Don't get me offensive, I would prevail on to the moon and back, with a kid fib on my shoulders and fire ants in my armpits, if I knew the detriment would weight the lives of good children for the make sweeter. But in the role of life provides me with no options, or I honest cave in to see them, I joy my way into discharge or attempt until I'm too hit to encircle hack off about doesn't matter what, but my mass desire. Being all techniques cave in to be selected for the constrain argue, I light o[ a candle and pray to my Gods for administration. How do you put forward with the stuff you can't change?

The Sun rises and sets in time.In time does the wind blow, the Earth lives in time, even the immeasurable infinite Sky lives in time.In time are created the divine scriptures, so also will those which are yet to be created. The practices and sacrifices of the wise are born of time. The greatest sages Angiras and Atharvan who heard these divine words are the creation of time as are the musicians of the gods and the fairies-the Gandharvas and Apsarases.Time rules over the spiritual, mental and material worlds through the divine Brahma. Crafting In Sandis Enchanted Garden

Crafting In Sandis Enchanted Garden

Hello crafty witches! My name is Sandi and I will be showing you how to create fun and magickal things right here in my enchanted garden. I want to thank everyone at Pagan Pages for inviting me to create with you! Today we are going to make a crystal pendulum and a question board.

Pendulums are used for many different things from finding lost items, to figuring out answers to problems, and even locating spirits. The pendulum is basically a chain with a pointy end. Copper and crystals are the best things to use for your pointer on your pendulum. If using a crystal you can choose one whose properties match the intentions of the question you are trying to answer.

A question board can be something as simple as a piece of paper with yes and no written on it or as fancy as you could imagine making one. A question board isn't necessary but can be a great help with focusing and for learning. If you are looking for a lost item a floor plan of the place you want to search is necessary. Hold your pendulum over the plan while seeing your lost item in your mind. The pendulum will move towards the spot your object is hiding! If you are searching for spirits focus on the desire to communicate with the other side and ask questions. The spirit may move your pendulum in the direction that indicates a yes or no answer to you. Sometimes a pendulum has been known to point to spirits in a room.

Before using you pendulum you must first calibrate it. To do this begin by establishing the direction you want it to seeing for a yes answer and which way for a no answer. Next, begin by asking questions you know the answers are true. After a few of these ask questions you know to be false and see how it answers. Once satisfied with the way the pendulum is answering you can begin using it for divination and searches!

You will need:

A crystal with a definite point

A 6 1/2 " chain or rope

2 - 10
" wires to wrap your crystal

3" wrap wire

A bead of your choosing

Flat nose pliers

Round Nose Pliers

Wire Cutters

The first thing we want to do is to wrap our crystal so it can be hung from a chain.

Take your 2 wires and bed them into an L shape in the center. Hold them so that they face each other and make a small square in the center.

Place the bottom of the crystal through the square and twist the ends

with your pliers 6 times.

Then fold the twisted wire flat against the stone towards the top and

start twisting the new sides together.

Bring the sides to the top of the crystal, hold together, and bend the wire back with the round nose pliers into a bail.

Take your wrap wire and wrap it around the bail.

Cut off the excess wires and flatten.

Cut a 2" - 3" length of wire and run through the bead. Use your flat nose pliers to hold the wire and the bead. While using the round nose pliers make a small loop and wrap the excess around the loop to hold it in place. Do the same with the other end but slip it through the chain before closing it off. This bead at the end will help you to hold onto the pendulum when using it.

Use a jump ring (or make one with wire) to hold the pendulum to the chain, and you are done!

Christine Odonnell Witchcraft Yes Hare Krishna No

Christine Odonnell Witchcraft Yes Hare Krishna No
Christine O'Donnell's witchcraft video clip still takes the cake bearing in mind it comes to Test out Maher's "troublesome" releases. In spite of that, this week is a friendly zip. In an try-out in the belated 1990's with Test out Maher, Christine O'Donnell federation trimming about all the religions that she "dabbled" in early settling on Christianity.

So as we know from the first clips O'Donnell "dabbled in Witchcraft" although she didn't interweave a coven. Her first commitment was at a Satanic alter...lettering of odd for someone who is established for her wish in God.

In spite of that, O'Donnell shares delicacy as to why she didn't "dabble in" Hare Krishna. It's not at the same time as she didn't portend to prune her original...it was at the same time as she loves meatballs.

So, witchcraft highly to try but Hare Krishna? No. Christine O'Donnell Loves her Meatballs too greatly.

National Confab Delegates Bicker Over Feeding Arrangements

National Confab Delegates Bicker Over Feeding Arrangements
Former Chief Justice of Nigeria and chairman of the conference,

retired Justice Idris Kutigi

Some delegates participating in the ongoing National Conference were on Thursday in Abuja divided over the feeding arrangement by the leadership of the confab.

While some of them expressed disappointment about the poor quality of food, others said they wanted the food to be monetised to enable them to source for food outside the conference venue.

This led to a heated argument. Tempers flew when a delegate from the South South, Mr. J.I Ebinum, moved a motion to stop the secretariat from the provision of lunch for the delegates.

His motion, which came shortly before the delegates took their break for lunch, was rejected by other delegates who shouted "No" to the request.

Ebinum had argued that the caterer handling the feeding services had failed to make enough food available despite complaints to that effect.

However, when the Chairman of the conference, Justice Idris Kutigi, put the matter to vote, the delegates rejected the motion and trooped out to the restaurant to eat.

When Kutigi tried to bring up the matter again towards the close of the sitting, another commotion ensued as delegates expressed reservations over the request.

A former Minister of Women Affairs and delegate representing elder statesmen, Mrs. Josephine Anenih, stood up to explain that the delegates were not asking for the stoppage of food supply "because things have improved."

She said, "For the past two days we have been eating Chinese food, that was why they are all very happy. Delegates are complaining that the food has not been enough because other staffers of the National Judicial Institute, venue of the confab, have been joining in sharing the food meant for only 492 delegates."

Another delegate from the South-West, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, also supported her, saying the conference should continue to provide the food but should try and improve on the quality.

He said, "We don't want monetisation of the food, but what we are saying is that they should improve on the quality of food being served."

Meanwhile, some delegates at the conference have appealed to Nigerians to imbibe the spirit of religious tolerance in order to reduce the rising spate of insecurity in the country.

As the debate on President Goodluck Jonathan's speech to the conference entered its fourth day on Thursday in Abuja, the delegates shifted from the speech to matters central to the conference.

The speakers said that issues about religion were usually very sensitive and urged Nigerians to always be careful about how they reacted to them.

Malam Muzammil Hangar, representing Muslim religious leaders, said religion constituted a major challenge to the country, adding that religion was a very volatile issue.

"We agree with the Christian Association of Nigeria's delegates to support the withdrawal of clear privileges in the constitution which appear tendentious to any religion; it should be removed across the board.

"We should remove privileges on public holidays relating to Christians or Muslims; sponsoring of pilgrimage to Mecca or Jerusalem; dress code; and insignias.

"We don't need them at all. Remove them if this will make the country to move forward," he said.

Hangar urged the conference to allow the religious representatives at the conference to sit together and resolve issues causing religious conflicts among themselves.

Prof. Andrew Haruna, representing the CAN, said religion was brought by the Arabs and the missionaries and should not be allowed to divide the country.

Necronomicon By Ed Simon

Necronomicon By Ed Simon
This is one of those books that is the subject of much discussion. Go to the book reviews of Amazon.com and you will find people that have performed the rituals described in this book and they will claim that they worked. Other people will tell you the book is hoax, a complete work of fiction.

Necronomicon is actually mentioned in several of HP Lovecraft's books with regards to the mythology of Ctulhu. The book is only mentioned and contents are not really spilled out. According to the mythology before man first walked the earth everything was Chaos and the Ancient ones ruled. The Ancient ones were headed by Tiamat, dragon Goddess of Sumeria. Her assistant was Kingu. An epic battle took place in which Enki blessed his son Marduk to go into battle against Tiamat and Kingu. Marduk was successful and he took the blood of Tiamat along with some clay and created the race of man. Who blew into man his breath which gave man life. Tiamat was driven into slumber and the Ancient ones were driven behind the gate ever waiting their return. The Ancient ones hate the race of man. Yet walking on this planet are cults that worship the Ancient ones.

According to the introduction, Abdul Harazed, nicknamed the mad Arab is the person who collected the information and compiled the book. He advises against even reading it, let alone using it. One must be careful when calling on the Elder gods who are now sleeping and in the event of emergency will have to be reminded of their commitment.

The book was published by two other people besides Ed Simon. Supposedly they suffered strange mishaps and one of them was dead yet somehow able to carry on his business. The book is based on Sumerian mythology and from what I have read it is pretty accurate. The introduction is fact filled with information about the American author Lovecraft who went back to living with two aunts. The intro also talks about occultist Aleister Crowley who was not directly exposed to Lovecrafft's work but was interested in Sumerian mythology. Some believe that the two minds connected on some Astral level and their connecting point was Sumeria.

Contained in this book are invocations of the Elder gods. There are also the fifty names of MArduk and formulas for passing through the gates of each of the gods. The demons also have formulas to help summon them. If one wants to do the ritual I advise at least reading it twice because the rituals seem rather complicated. Severaal rituals call for obtaining metals and engraving sigils on them and wrapping them in expensive silk. Like other forms of magick you do have to cast your cirle. You watcher protects you but if the ritual is not done correctly then your watcher can turn on you. This is a great book if you are into Sumerian mythology, ritual magick and/or Lovecraft.Enjoy the blog

Magical Powers Of Candles And Prayers

Magical Powers Of Candles And Prayers
Last month I wrote the following article for my June newsletter. I thought candles and prayers, sometimes called spells, was an interesting topic that could be put to use by anyone who would like to make positive changes in different area's of their lives and even others. Then I thought what a great idea to bring this topic to my weekly radio show "Journey Into The Paranormal".

I learned about the magic of candles and the meaning of the colors when I was about fourteen years old. Many years ago I owned a new age metaphysical shop and sold everything one needed to conduct a candle prayer and so much more. So I have seen and experienced this first hand and it works well and can help with many things such as healing or getting a job. I highly recommend that you also listen to the archive of the radio show I did on the subject in which I go into even more detail on how to properly bless candles and so much more.

"June 2009 Newsletter

Candle burning goes as far back as the ancient Egyptians. They were not used by the Egyptians just for light, they also used them in forms of prayer and ritual. From ancient times all the way up to the present time candles are widely used in the practice of prayer and ritual. When you go into a church there are candles burning on the alter and it is certainly not because the priest needs some light. We see candles at weddings when they are lit to ensure a long happy marriage. They are even burned at funerals in honor of the dead. Candles have a special energy and power to them, a power that many are not aware of.

People light candles for prayer and that is OK. Some think when a candle is lit to help bring a little love into your life then it is considered spell casting and therefore evil or even black magic. Well that is not at all the case. A spell is simply an intention that is put out into the universe. Whether it be a simple prayer at bed time or lighting a candle at church for your sick Aunt Edith, it is still a spell. Even though your own thoughts can create your own future, candles bring more of a charge to that intent. This is why it is important to always project positive energy and positive thoughts, it affects our energy and our lives. The same goes for burning candles for a specific intent. The intent should always be positive.

People burn candles in the room just to bring a nice change to the atmosphere. The actual color of the candles also have a lot to do with the energy they will attract. In the past I have heard many people relate black candles to evil or dark magic. This is not at all true. Anything can be used for both a positive or negative result. Black is actually a good color of candle to burn to help get rid of negative energy or for a banishing. I have provided a list below of all the colors and their meanings. But first you should realize a few things on candle burning and how to get better results.

For starters you should never burn a candle with a negative intent. For example, do not burn a candle to get a certain person to fall in love with you. That is actually consider dark and you should try this instead. Try burning a red candle to attract the right person to you and if you are currently having a problem in a relationship you may want to put out an intent like "Please allow my relationship to go in the direction it needs to soon for the good of the two of us and the good of all." You can burn candles to help you with psychic work or to help someone through the healing process.

You can start off doing something that is pretty simple such as picking the appropriate color candle, lighting it and saying a little prayers. In most cases you should use a long taper candle or a smaller candle and unscented too. You want a candle that is going to burn out in a few hours. You could also go with the seven day novena candles. these are the tall candles in the glass that you see often in churches. When using the novena candles you are to let them burn for days until they burn out completely. Each day at a specific time you should repeat your prayer. It will help greatly if you use the creative visualization meditation that was in last months newsletter. You want to picture in your mind your intent happening and coming true.

Some people also believe in blessing their candles and even burning the candles on specific days of the week and during different phases of the moon. I certainly would pay attention to the moon phases when doing a candle prayer. If you are looking to gain something such as love, maybe a candle for a new job or career, you should do so during the waxing moon. That is the time from the new moon to the full moon. If you are trying to rid yourself of something, like a habit or illness, then you should do this during the waning moon. That is between the full moon and the new moon. I gave complete details of how you should bless your candles along with the proper oils and incense on my past radio show.

One other thing I would like to mention. The list below of the colors and their meanings is not only effective in candles, its also effective in the clothing you wear and the rooms you spend a lot of time in. At home I have a room we call the Angel room. Of course its name comes from the collection of Angels in the room. This is a place where I do my psychic work, meditation, prayer and so forth. We painted this room and the room in my office where I do readings purple and lavender. Shades of purple is a strong color to attract psychic energy and that was my exact intent when painting those rooms. You should never paint rooms in you home dark colors and should really avoid wearing all dark clothing. This can have a great effect on your moods and on how others people actually view or judge you. Bright cheery colors are best.

There are many books out there that teach more about burning candles and even books with prayers that go along with the candle burning. I have including a simple prayer below that I learned from a friend many years ago. You can simply change it around to fit your needs. When she gave me the prayer there were blank spaces that have to be filled in. I underlined the words where the blank spaces would have appeared. These are the words you can change to fit your intent. I thought this was a fascinating subject to share with you. Some of us never realized that candle prayers go back into ancient times and we still do it today, even on your birthday when you make a wish and blow out the candles. Good luck with you candle prayers and may this article inspire you to make a positive change in your life.

PRAYER - As you light the candle repeat the following three times. allow the candle to burn out completely.

"In the name of the light, who is the lord of the universe. May the light and energy of this candle remove all fear, negativity and doubt and transmute to a powerful Healing force. A Skeptic Guide To Bible Study For Christians Purpose And Approach
This is the second of a series of articles titled, A Skeptic's Guide to Bible Study for Christians. For background, please see the Introduction.

If you are a Christian you have probably been told the virtues of daily Bible study. Among other things, you have probably been told that doing so will teach you how to live and/or grow in your faith (1 Peter 2:2), that you will be equipped to answer questions (1 Peter 3:15), you will learn to discern whether others speak spiritual truth (as exemplified in Acts 17:11), and perhaps most importantly that it pleases God (2 Tim. 2:15). In simpler terms, Bible study is supposed to teach you how to live, think, and judge the truth. Plus, it will make Him happy.

These results certainly seem worthwhile. As confusing as this world can often be, a bit of focus and guidance is appealing. If in the process we ingratiate ourselves to a God with the power to give eternal glory or damnation, so much the better.

Yet what if those reasons are flawed? Is it possible that a student can be completely earnest, yet become misinformed due to his purpose for study? To put it another way, would a student learn anything about the world by studying the Lord of the Rings, regardless of how intently it is studied or how much he wanted to learn how to behave based on that text? The point is that the student gains nothing if study is approached in the wrong way, for the wrong reasons. Historians don't learn about ancient Greek culture from Homer's Iliad or Odyssey by assuming the mythical beings interspersed through those pages are real. They are critical, careful, and compare the text to other writings to extrapolate aspects of ancient Greek society.

There are certain assumptions implicit to the results listed in the first paragraphs. Among them is the assumption that the student is already familiar with Christian teaching, and is to look for ways in which to apply it to daily life. Another is the assumed validity of the Bible. Yet another is its assumed relevancy today. It could be easily argued that these assumptions also reduce the quality of the scholarship itself, as has already been suggested.

While still a Christian, I was often told to approach Bible study in a certain way. I was told the proper approach is one of prayerful consideration, that we can be assured of its divine origin, and that problematic passages or apparent contradictions have a resolution in light of progressive revelation or context. Contradictions were redefined as 'tension,' and I was told that the Holy Spirit would guide me to the truth. Other advice, some of it sound, was offered in the form of specific recommendations for determining whether a doctrine was intended for us today, methods of harmonization, and contextual evaluation. As reinforcement I was directed to several sources of apologetics materials.

Paradoxically, the Bible was also likened to a newspaper in the sense that it should be considered as meeting journalistic standards (a high ideal, seldom accomplished even today). Of course, this also implies accessibility and relevancy. Really though, the metaphor is misplaced because nearly all of us would agree that many newspaper reports have turned out to be false, or at least suffer from bias. It is perhaps a stroke of poetic irony that the same people who gave me this advice wouldn't trust a newspaper for anything except as a tool for housebreaking their pet. But I digress.

Chances are you've had similar experiences.

Part of what these recommendations do is to preclude the type of probing questions we might ask in other circumstances. This is understandable to an extent. The average American has not been educated in ancient near eastern cultures or languages, making the Bible difficult to understand even in English. However, the problem is that by failing to question those things we don't understand, we short-change ourselves and can easily fall into the trap of blind faith. Even while still a Christian, I felt this was a bad idea, particularly in light of the great commandment (see Matt. 22:37, Mark 12:30, and Luke 10:27). If the Bible is truly the work of God it should stand up to the most rigorous scrutiny. That is, we should not have to resort to special pleading to make a case for the Bible (e.g., God is hidden, God does what He wants, progressive revelation, God's ways are not men's ways, and so on); it should stand on its own.

And I believe it does - as a historical study of ancient Hebrew history and philosophy. The Bible is a fascinating set of writings, and worth studying for no other reason than it is rich with history, poetry, and ancient philosophy. Some of the principles expressed therein are even worth emulating. Others, sadly, are not. Though it is possible to learn the former principles elsewhere - from the writings of contemporary philosophers, for example - the Bible lends historical weight to these principles as functionally absolute. Unfortunately, if one approaches the Bible in the manner suggested previously by church leaders, it seems almost inevitable that the student will become a walking contradiction; asserting the love of God for mankind even as He condemns us for our failure to measure up to an impossible standard. Therefore I suggest that Bible study is worthwhile, but it should be done with the attitude of a student seeking to learn, not just emulate.

Many Christian authors decry the type of rigorous study suggested as misguided at best. Today these types of studies fall under the heading of textual criticism, scientific exegesis, or some variant ther. Indeed, there is no shortage of attacks on these methods, which range from mild rebukes to charges of heresy. Though a few apologists do adopt some of the methods of textual critics, they ignore others or draw sweeping conclusions not warranted by the results of this kind of study. Essentially, apologists use these methods to shore up "a priori" beliefs concerning their faith, rather than as a vehicle for gaining knowledge. Yet even this is an improvement over the past.

Beginning well before the Reformation, studies of the Bible using the historical method usually met with harsh criticism. In fact, many otherwise innocuous books on philosophy, science, and so on were denounced - even banned - as heretical. As early as 496 C.E., books not considered complimentary were officially banned by the Catholic Church. Pope Gelasius I is traditionally credited with writing the Decretum Gelasianum de Libris Recipiendis et Non Recipiendis, which contains a list of books considered either acceptable or apocryphal. In the early 16th century, Pope Julius II convoked the Fifth Lateran Council, among whose decrees included a prohibition of the printing of books without the approval of the diocese, on pain of excommunication. At the Council of Trent in 1546, ten rules were developed concerning prohibited books. Notably, the rules allow for nearly any book provided the text contained nothing contrary to sound doctrine (which we can safely assume meant 'Catholic' doctrine only). Naturally, this includes any analysis of the Bible proceeding from a non-spiritual standpoint.

Just over ten years later, the Catholic Church issued the first of several editions of the Index Librorum Prohibitorum or, "List of Prohibited Books" (interesting recent articles on this document can be found here and here). Over the centuries, the works of many theologians, historians, biblical translators, and others were added to the list. Among those listed were the works of Richard Simon and Alfred Loisy, both of whom arguably inaugurated the study of the Bible in a modern (and critical) context.

Early Protestants adopted a similar attitude, and attacks both direct and indirect were leveled at the kind of reasoned study suggested. In addition to being considered the traditional father of the Reformation, Martin Luther is famous for his attacks on reason, saying "Faith must trample under foot all reason, sense, and understanding," and "Reason is a whore, the greatest enemy that faith has." With regard to books, he said "The multitude of books is a great evil. There is no limit to this fever for writing." Others also expounded on the evils of knowledge that doesn't originate with the Bible. John Calvin, for example, once stated that "Knowledge of the sciences is so much smoke apart from the heavenly science of Christ." These examples serve to illustrate that Christians have long been averse to anything that challenges their faith, including the historical method of Bible study.

As has already been mentioned, these attitudes yet prevail in some circles. Time, however, has wrought changes in those attitudes. Modern apologetics is often couched in language suggesting that the historical method supports the magical aspects of scripture. Writers such as Josh McDowell and Lee Strobel have successfully marketed their works to a broad audience eager to hear how science and history confirm the Bible. Meanwhile, the Vatican has also adopted a less stringent attitude. In the Pontifical Biblical Commission's 1993 document, The Interpretation of the Bible in the Church, the use of the critical approach to Bible studies was affirmed, yet it also warned of spiritual dangers considered inherent to such an approach.

In spite of the change in attitude toward the critical method, its application still runs afoul of the credulity usually required of students, and has caused a great deal of misunderstanding of what constitutes evidence, the rules of logic, and honest questioning. For example, apologists sometimes point to the remarkable attestation of the Bible as evidence of its divine origin. However, simple logic and an understanding of evidence reveal that attestation does not validate that idea, for many reasons. It is not uncommon even today to find well-attested reports of current events having been reported inaccurately in the news, influenced by not only notoriously unreliable witness testimony, bias, difficulty in obtaining facts, and other challenges. Moreover, the Bible also reports several miraculous and magical events which simply cannot be trusted solely on the basis of thousand-year-old writings. Modern claims of UFO sightings, ghosts, fairies, and others fall into the same category. Regardless of how well-documented these phenomena may be, the documentation alone cannot bear witness of itself.

The standard Christian apologetic approach to Bible study is problematic in that it favors faith over reason. Any approach that "a priori" assumes a text originates with a supernatural author restricts the student to only a few possibilities, thereby leaving out a host of others. The same, perhaps, could be said of a completely naturalistic approach. What we should strive for is an understanding in today's context, for that's where we find its application. Moreover, it makes no sense whatsoever that a critical study of the Bible should be eschewed in favor of blind faith. Nor should this type of study be encumbered by sweeping and unfounded conclusions. If indeed the Bible is the product of divine authorship, it should be able to withstand such scrutiny with ease, without the need to resort to special pleading.

Some may be still be wondering what exactly is being proposed. Am I suggesting that we all go back to school and earn degrees in anthropology, archaeology, theology, linguistics, and so on? Not at all. With the resources now commonly available we can perform a reasoned survey of the Bible that can yield profitable results. In the end, only you can decide what to believe, and you have nothing to fear by asking questions. After all, Abraham questioned God concerning Sodom (Gen. 18:23-32) without suffering consequences. Thus, we should not fear to question the Bible and learn what it means for today's world.

In upcoming posts, we'll examine several aspects of Bible study. From basic materials, to the rules of logic and evidence, to suggested questions and resources for finding answers (both friendly and unfriendly), I'm going to do my level best to provide you with additional tools to add to your study arsenal. For illustrative purposes, I may sometimes propose alternate answers to some of the questions, but will refrain from drawing final conclusions.
