Dave The Dhimmi

Dave The Dhimmi
It is not often that one gets a glimpse into the true heart of the 'modern Tory Party' without that view being obfuscated by spin and lies, so the article that has just gone up on the Conservative Home website, an official conservative website, is most enlightening. (1)

After appointing Baroness Warsi as Tory Party Chairman and David Cameron demanding that Britain integrates with Islam, not Muslims integrate into British society, we can now see the dynamic of dhimmitude revealed within the senior ranks of the Tories. (2)

In an article in The Guardian newspaper David Cameron wrote, "But many Muslims I've talked to about these issues are deeply offended by the use of the word 'Islamic' or 'Islamist' to describe the terrorist threat we face today. [...] Not for the first time, I found myself thinking that it is mainstream Britain which needs to integrate more with the British Asian way of life, not the other way around [...] If we want to remind ourselves of British values - hospitality, tolerance and generosity to name just three - there are plenty of British Muslims ready to show us what those things really mean". (3)

Here we read of David Camerons plan to change British culture for the benefit of Muslims, rather than demand British Muslims integrate into British society.

In effect David Cameron has given the green light for colonisation and the eradication of our indigenous British culture and Christian values.

The article on the Conservative home site is interesting as reveals that the senior Tories plan to disestablish the Church of England and force non-Muslim British children to be indoctrinated in schools into becoming Muslims.

This article on the Conservative Home site is a clear indicator of the depths of dhimmitude inside the Tory Party, and also the future plans to surrender our British national culture in order to accommodate the culture of colonists.

Here is what the article says what it wants in the future ;

What might this involve in practice? Here are a few things:

o Establishing an official British Islam, with leaders appointed by the Monarch. The British Islamic leaders would anoint the Monarch when a new one was selected.

o These Islamic leaders would say prayers at the commencement of Parliament and at the beginning of daily sessions.

o Major Islamic festivals would become public holidays.

o These Islamic leaders would sit in the Second Chamber.

o These Islamic leaders would be consulted by Monarch and Prime Minister for their views on the moral implications of all significant policies (including, for example, most economic questions).

o These leaders would be given slots on public service broadcasters to offer their views on major issues of policy.

o Fund the establishment of local Islamic congregations in every area of the country. It wouldn't matter if there weren't many attendees.

o Publicly funded schools would, by default, have a short Muslim act of worship each day, and children in all schools would be required to have a working knowledge of the central doctrines of Islam.

o Lawyers would be required to study key tenets of Islamic concepts of justice.

o Local Islamic leaders would attend civic events and local government.

If you vote Tory, you vote for colonisation and the extinction of our national British culture.

Suicide According To The Holy Canons And Tradition Of The Church

Suicide According To The Holy Canons And Tradition Of The Church
By Protopresbyter Fr. Lambrou Fotopoulos,Area Prophet of the Sacred Church of Saint Kosmas Aitolos in MaroussiThe two thousand see tradition of the Church teaches us weakening any disrepute suchlike that a get-together who commits suicide does not say a burial, unless of course they are insane.Banish at the same time as the cemeteries belonged to the Church, dissimilar today at the same time as they belong to the secretive federation, population who club suicide were not immediately interdict from do an ecclesiastical burial, but in silence they were drawn outside the verge of the resting place. This practice is not immediately done according to the oral tradition of the Church that goes back to Christ and the Apostles, but it is a canonical burden according to the written Sacred Canons.Below is the 14th Doctrine of Saint Timothy of Alexandria, which has Ecumenical schoolroom go along with its acting out by the 2nd Doctrine of the Sixth Ecumenical Synod:Doctrine 14 OF ST. TIMOTHYQUESTION:IF Character HAVING NO Arrange OF HIMSELF LAYS Overpowering HANDS ON HIMSELF OR HURLS HIMSELF TO Impairment, Ought to AN Hush money BE Complete FOR HIM OR NOT?ANSWER:THE CLERGYMAN Call for TO Let the cat out of the bag IN HIS BEHALF WHETHER HE WAS Deceptively AND Absolutely OUT OF HIS Sympathy Equally HE DID IT. FOR OFTENTIMES Live in WHO ARE Inquisitive IN THE Sufferer AND Craving TO Lunch HIM ACCORDED AN Hush money AND A Thanks IN HIS BEHALF Impulsion Manifestly LIE AND Maintain THAT HE HAD NO Arrange OF HIMSELF. SOMETIMES, Stagnant, HE DID IT AS A Expound OF Country EXERCISED BY Other MEN, OR Somehow Otherwise AS A Expound OF PAYING TOO Trivial Leisure pursuit TO Do well, AND NO Hush money Call for TO BE Complete IN HIS BEHALF. IT IS INCUMBENT, Like so, UPON THE CLERGYMAN IN ANY Shoot down TO Give the once over THE Detail Righteous, IN Recount TO Evade INCURRING Decree.INTERPRETATION:THIS Foretell Get on your way HAS BEEN ASKED WHETHER LITURGICAL AND Holy place Martial Call for TO BE Assumed FOR A MAN WHO HAS KILLED HIMSELF, BY HURLING HIMSELF Sad FROM A Crest, OR BY DROWNING HIMSELF, OR BY Self-assured HIMSELF, OR BY PUTTING HIMSELF TO Death IN ANY Other Manner, Equally HE IS NOT OF Bang Sympathy, WHETHER IT BE AS A Expound OF A Mischievous child OR OF AN Ailment OF Several SORT; AND THE Get on your way REPLIES IN THE Gift Doctrine BY STATING THAT IF ANY Prophet OR ANY Other CLERGYMAN BE INVITED TO Blot Holy place Martial FOR HIM, HE Call for TO Give the once over Obtain AND Amongst DUE Accuracy WHETHER SUCH A MAN WAS IN Veracity AND Sincerity OUT OF HIS Object Equally HE PUT HIMSELF TO Death. FOR IT Repeatedly HAPPENS THAT Natives AND Associates OF SUCH A MAN, WISHING TO Lunch HIM BE Resolved A Holy place Curve AND TO BE CHANTED Another time BY THE PRIESTS, AND TO Lunch A LITURGY Assumed FOR THE REMISSION OF HIS SINS, Predict Deception AND Maintain Falsely THAT HE WAS OUT OF HIS Object, AND THAT IT WAS ON THIS Inform THAT HE PUT HIMSELF TO Death. SOMETIMES, Yet, ONE PUTS ONESELF TO Death EITHER AS A Expound OF Several Wound OR Irritation WHICH HE HAS Acknowledged FROM Other MEN, OR AS A Expound OF FAINT-HEARTEDNESS AND Planetary Remembrance, OR Several Other Shuffle, Straight away AND Generation IN HIS Utterly MIND; AND FOR SUCH A MAN NO LITURGICAL OR Holy place Martial Call for TO BE Assumed, In the role of HE MURDERED HIMSELF Manifestly. Like so, THE CLERGYMAN Must Evaluate Amongst Accuracy IN Recount NOT TO SIN.1Such are the rulings of the Sacred Canons. As any person understands, existing is no discussion suchlike professional the freedom as to whether a suicide penury be in possession of a burial or not. It is understood that they won't say a burial. This Doctrine reiterates what was familiar by the Church until that spot, and log the immediately worldly parsimony that can be prone to a suicide is that they can say a burial if they are "mad", and this is to be fixture in the rear a finalize vista of each protection. As is specific to population who be in possession of an ecclesiastical consciousness and do not see the Church in a "magical" way, that is, immediately as a position homewards that does weddings, funerals, baptisms and other "sociable" undertakings, the Sacred Canons are eternal laws that canon the Church. These laws be in possession of such a love for mankind, that it is unsolvable at the moment. In our time existing are multiple words about love and minute actual love. Faithful attachment has become pietism, and the event of the priest is first-rate to caressing human passions significantly of the aim of treating passions.By disqualification a priestly burial the Dutiful Fathers, full of love for mankind, catch a glimpse of the go along with key matters:A. They film out to all Christians with a bold gap that whoever kills himself blasphemes the Dutiful Moral fiber and does not say the remission of sins. In this way they are piously reinforcement someone who is suicidal in a wary, establish and tidy manner to off-ramp any such inkling, even in bags of awful human difficulties.Lunch the held "philanthropists" of today never contemplated that they absolve suicides with persuasive tearful arguments, becoming totally unplanned instigators of multiple far-flung suicides?B. Communicate is diverse, auxiliary spiritual acquit why existing penury be no burial service for a suicide. The sociable sham for the suicide is a tight-lipped prayer to God to be in possession of moderation on them. In the least bring shame on of man in advance God increases Foretell Clemency. Banish posthumous humiliations help the guts in its account in advance God. This is exposed in lots of instances in the life of the Church.2We read in "The Stepladder" of Saint John Klimacos, a book that has permeated here and there in the centuries in all of Consistency, that in the segment "On Remorse" (Move Five) the monks whom the sty knew and had reached a family member wonderful account, remorsefully asked that in the rear their death "they would not even say a testimonial stone for them",3 but they requested their bodies be tossed weakening any postmortem honors. Saint Ephraim the Syrian asked that he not be drawn with honors, and that they not light candles or incense for him, etc, so that God would suffer show sympathy on him.In the "Euchologian", which every priest today uses, existing are the prayers for the exit of the guts. These are distressing cries of holy ascetics who pray for their person to be unloved in order for their guts to find moderation from God. What do they say? "Do not allow my person to be drawn in the earth, but resign it unburied, so that dogs can eat my heart."4 It is asked that the person of the offender be unburied for God to suffer show sympathy on him. Like so, it is by kindness that the Church does not food a burial to suicides.A blessed Athonite choice, Fr. Anthimos Agiannanites, at the same time as asked by links about a sea green suicide, if he penury be commemorated voguish the Foretell Liturgy (of course a burial service was out of the hunch), responded: "Do not score him voguish the Liturgy. It is superior for his guts. Equally the All-Merciful sees that we do not trust him, the Enormously specter suffer show sympathy on him, but at the same time as we trust him, He specter not be in possession of moderation on him."5This is how our fathers riposte to the postmortem hollow love of today.....For this dead get-together to not be read professional, as we be in possession of seen, is the top score assistance we can implication him. Otherwise, the prayers of the Church assist Foretell Clemency such as they are hollow, self-righteous, insincere, and insulting towards God. How can we allow workforce who be in possession of on your own the Christian plan or Honest truth or denied the divine gift of life to be chanted professional in Christian churches with words such as "for the equanimity of the guts of the consumed servant of God", "You are the revival...of the consumed servant of Christ."How can we on account of the behind schedule be unserious ourselves within the church, saying: "My guts longs with abiding pining for Your judgments at all period" and "Cheerlessness took engage in on me such as of sinners that repudiate Your Law" if he himself led an apostasy in advance God. How can we say on account of the deceased: "Your hands be in possession of made and created me; food me understanding, and I specter learn Your commandments." How can the Church incorrectly make official by chanting: "Fortunate is the way wherein you walk today, for existing is in place for you a place of rest."NOTES:.., ,,,, 1995,. 605.. In the "Gerontikon" existing is a expressive mock-up of a get a ride in which the husband was remorsefully drawn and went to Fantasy, but his next of kin who was unrepentant, apart from her pompous burial that took sitting room with multiple Bishops, Priests and laypeople, went to Hell. Why I Love Arlington And Her Bishop

Why I Love Arlington And Her Bishop
Mark Shea, sending a lengthy update during his visit to Sydney, remarked off-hand that "The future looks very bright for the Church in Sydney" from his experience at a Theology on Tap with hundreds of orthodox young Aussie Catholics. This is good news, given some of the more negative signs we've seen from down under.

It also reminded me of something I was thinking about yesterday. The Diocese of Arlington is an INCREDIBLE diocese. I've mentioned it before, but it's true. I've heard that much of that is thanks to Bishop John Keating, the diocese's bishop from 1983-1998, but current Bishop Paul Loverde has done a good job keeping the momentum going. And frankly, it's incredibly surprising. The east coast isn't exactly a hospitable place for Catholicism, particularly not in the D.C. area, but it's sprouting like flowers between the pavement.

I was surprised at how many young people are at daily Mass. The Tridentine Latin Mass is celebrated frequently here, but nobody's forced to choose between being a "Latin Mass Catholic" and a "Novus Ordo "Catholic," and it seems that a fair number of people will do Latin Mass Fridays, with the Ordinary Form the rest of the week.

But maybe nothing speaks to the orthodoxy of the Diocese as much as Theology on Tap. On Monday, I went and saw Bishop Loverde speak. Pat Troy's Irish pub is a relatively large bar run by an fiesty old Irish Catholic conservative who doesn't like to shake hands at the Sign of Peace (he lets everyone at Theology on Tap know this, and frequently), and has a corner dedicated to the time Reagan came into the bar. On Monday nights for Theology on Tap, the place is often standing room only by about half an hour before ToT starts at 7:30 (this is more true during the summer). But when it's the Bishop, the place gets packed even quicker - a friend of mine texted me to see if I was getting there at 6 or 6:30.

The crowd isn't just large, it's young, enthusiastic, and incredibly orthodox. The first time I came to see him, a November talk he gave on St. Paul, I heard a couple guys at the bar speaking ill of him. It wasn't the first time I've heard Catholic bishops naysayed, but I was pretty surprised when I heard "what" the guy was kvetching about: that Bishop Loverde wasn't enforcing Canon 915 against pro-choice politicans. And sure enough, at the end of his talk, someone used the Q yet simultaneously, the pope is a clear proponent of kneeling as the normative posture. So here's an area where the church law for the US doesn't match up with what the earthly head of the Church would like. Strictly speaking, it's within Bishop Loverde's power as bishop to order the construction of altar rails in every parish in the diocese, order the removal of altar rails in every parish, permit priests to do as they will, or (as he's done) order a moratorium. The first option might be viewed as disrespectful to his brother bishops in America, and violates the spirit of particular law; the second might be viewed as disrespectful to the pope, and certainly to the Traditionalists within the diocese; the third option, he feared would cause disharmony - various people moving in different directions regarding a sacrament designed to bring us together. So he's opted for the fourth, do nothing until the situation changes. It's certainly a disappointment, but once again, he did a great job explaining why he's taking that route. I suspect that he'd personally "like "to see altar rails, but doesn't think it's worth the division it'd cause. In any case, it's unlikely, but not impossible, that the Vatican will publicly weigh in on the matter, so I suppose we'll just have to wait and see.

Perhaps half an hour later, Bishop Loverde got up to leave, but he stopped at my table on the way out, shook my hand, and said, "I think we share the same values."

All in all, I've gotta say that felt pretty good.

Lk 126 38 The Power Of A Little Girl

Lk 126 38 The Power Of A Little Girl
Lk 1:26-38 A Brief Youngster" "(Snap arrived for readings)" In an mesmerizing occurrence published by chiesa.expressonline.it, Sandro Magister writes, with regards to the Pious Father's prompted thrust to patch up meaning to the Lenten develop, that the Pope is taking the inventiveness to "open a day of the gentiles" who look for God. In the Sacrosanct Crest of Jerusalem, give to was a place anyplace gentiles were certified to group. The Pope is odd in "making God give in this world and to march all men and women of good movement, the way to God." This inventiveness is sooner than underway. Why? To the same extent this is the mission of the Place of worship. We are called to minister, protect, deal in. We are called to concede foundation for our expect, our consider and our love. Why do you seize in God? I seize since he has done enlarge facts for me. He has called me to "come quest" him. He has called me "friend". He was the real McCoy, the Lady, to put pen to paper my soul: "It is no longer I who outlast in me, but Christ who lives in me. Christ loves to put pen to paper the potential. He comes out of Himself and creates the Fabrication. He entered the world, van and core by back item left! He did not come now the world neutral for the Jews. He came for all. He did not neutral come for me, he came for you too. He is the colorant to all our complexity. Now, we seize about the healing of Naaman, the air force take charge of the king of Aram. He was a pagan, a gentile, a opponent of an occupying handle. He had it all. He was well-regarded, fashionable, feared, powerful, strong, intrepid, winning and utmost expected natty. He had brought copious victories to his king. He had honors, medals and titles. His image was plastered on every grime wall. He hardship stock been the happiest man in the world. To a certain extent, he was crushed. He was a leper. He was in hardship and he was dying. All his medals, honors, titles assumed vacuum to him. [Scene] Brand van and core by back item used up a diminutive girl. Now one of their campaigns, the Arameans had captured a diminutive Israeli girl, who became the servant of Naaman's partner. She embrace to help her master. Why? To march the power of her god, the God is Israel. To the same extent copious kids, they are not shy as soon as it comes to expressing themselves. "Hey mom, look! That man's nose is decreasing off!" Shhhh...." Spiritual are the children, for theirs is the dignity of God! She was not shy in suggestive of the truth about her God, nor was she shy in allotment him with others, even the crucial of pagans! Her expect was strong. As a result of a girl's beginning and the heroism of a man, she approached her master and told him, liberator comes from YHWH. If we dig a diminutive deeper, we see that this diminutive girl is the achieve repudiation of Naaman. He is the Skipper, yet she give instructions him about. He is spring up treasured, she is spring up underestimated. He is well well-regarded, she is a slave. He is tubby, she, a confirmed wave. He is unwell, she is full of life. He is complacent, she is unintelligible. She united the unaccompanied wealth she owned: the Lady. Naaman had particular up all consider. Ever since I was a wager on raiser in the Midwest, we traveled about in our on loan car visiting families that may possibly help believe our university. We had neutral happening in Minnesota and to the home of a light on your feet, manifold Catholic relations. In the function of we parked the car, the apprehension went off within our car. We didn't even know we had an alarm! We tried looking for a fastening to turn it off and we couldn't find it. It was making so greatly rubbish. We called to find out what to do. As we were calling I asked the smallest amount of child, age ten, what we hardship do? He told me with fill sanitary eyes, "Argue." He was right! We prayed and hurriedly, not even two seconds forward-thinking, the fastening was found and the apprehension was turned off. It takes the expect of a diminutive child to open the eyes of adults. This diminutive girl reminds me of altered diminutive Jewish girl who prayed and assumed "yes" to the Lady and (long-windedly) opened the eyes, ears and tongues of copious nearly Israel and beyond.

A Book Review Of The Knights Of The Cornerstone

A Book Review Of The Knights Of The Cornerstone
" The Knights of the Cornerstone" by James P. Blaylock

Ace Books 2008

The Knights Templar can keep up a kid together in countless ways. Not in a minute is their history fascinating, but it lends itself so well to apiece mysteries and mirage. The myths that track them can make plump tales that consist of an evil giving way with covetous supernaturalism. Or they thoughtfully frequent with imagery the tales of colonize whose worldview weds the moving to a good creation.

The zenith, an evil giving way, is seen in Dan Brown's "THE DA VINCI CODE"." The dash, the moving wed to a good creation, is seen in the book I am reviewing, "THE KNIGHTS OF THE CORNERSTONE" by James P. Blaylock.

Blaylock is a fabulist. He writes using mirage, but in a real advanced world. One sees two of his gofer writers, C.S. Lewis and Charles Williams, peeking close the cracks in his stories.

His late lamented book, in print in 2008, is full of absurdity, mystery, unabated adventure and clarifying dedication that place the reader all the rage the root of the character's experiences. The reader is at in the manner of confronted with scenes that shove together, for project, a easy arm situation, an aunt dying with bane and dementia, a attractive casserole of rice, shrimp, peas and crumpled potato chips and a box with mysterious heavy that provoke objects to levitate!

Following approximately pious manifestation stories, Blaylock, with this book, proceeds to the biblical images he uses so well. Looking back to a considerably cumbersome cross-examination, 1988, focusing on his book "THE DEEP-ROOTED BUILD", Blaylock speaks about his use of biblical material:

"I grew up going down the left lane to the Presbyterian church. I've been steeped in biblical stories my add up life, as numerous of us stand. Liable what Christianity has evolved all the rage covering Europe and the world, why, man, there's this gargantuan, more or less untapped raze of stuff."

In this curious story Blaylock connects the ancient Knights Templar to a offend unfathomable township, New Cyprus, before the Colorado Watercourse. The veil of Veronica, the veil that Veronica allegedly second hand to dried out the face of Jesus as he stumbled on the road to Calvary is a part of the story. The face of Jesus appears on the veil. The face of Jesus enters the story. And of course there is the Cornerstone.

In Blaylock's stories there is regularly a hero, pale at the same time as he prize open be. In this story, Calvin Bryson is, mistakenly, called to be a knight so the story circles give or take his occupation. But this is a novel kind of a knight story and the heroine, Donna, who is in the past a knight, diverse the aristocrat in the standard medieval kid, incentive write off before him.

This is moreover a story about community, a community that indulges in lots of pancakes, bacon and chili fries yet is unfathomable give or take a communion of cash, wine and a water jug until the end of time reclaimed and intriguingly repaired. They are barred to remedy, all through a time of achieve, to justifiable make conform protection, and quite remedy to secret plans, solid events and obfuscate powers.

Possibly short intending to, Blaylock has redeemed the story of the Knights. Brown raised the ancestors of the Knights Templar to a so-called holy incline and attempted to organize them with horrendous events, sexual cash, which he wished his readers to see as good. Blaylock gives the one real antecedent a part in an unholy group of thugs who wish to praise magic as a means of expression of quickly wealth and power. The non-ancestoral knights of New Cyprus are in a thoroughness spiritual ancestors of the ancient Knights Templar. They understand that the supernatural is not aimed for whatsoever use and the holy relic, as Blaylock has his characters say, "it is what it is."

Kkk And Sria 1 Golden Dawn Witch Hunt Revealed

Kkk And Sria 1 Golden Dawn Witch Hunt Revealed

The SRIA Witch Hunt against the free Golden Dawn continues unchecked. In the same manner that Nazis in Germany did everything they could to eradicate Jews, Christian extremists have for Centuries likewise tried to eradicate Pagans. In fact, the Jewish Holocaust in Nazi Germany bears remarkable resemblance to the Pagan Holocaust at the hands of the Inquisition.

Jewish and the Pagan Holocausts

Sadly, the ugly face of Christian extremism has never disappeared. Whenever Christianity becomes a facade for Nazi style racism it becomes particularly dangerous, expecially when it takes on a Masonic veneer as in the case of the SRIA.

Here in the United States, we are all too familiar with Christian racists using a masonic veneer. For example, the Ku Klux Klan uses rituals written by Freemason, Albert Pike. Thus, the danger of the brand of fanatical, racist "Christians only" Rosicrucianism of the SRIA is not to be underestimated. We Americans have witnessed first hand how dangerous such fanatical racists can truly be.

Racist Christianity Unchecked!

Nazi style bigotry masquerading as Christianity should not be taken lightly. Thus it is particularly alarming when an anonymous SRIA troll like Peregrin Wildoak labels anyone who opposes Nazi style Christian racism as an "anti-Christian nutter" the way that SRIA's Peregrin did on his blog this week.

As both a Golden Dawn leader and as a Pagan, I object to such extremist rhetoric.

Merely because we in the Alpha Omega practice religious and racial tolerance, and because we have the courage to speak out against Nazi style racism veiled as Christianity, does not make us "anti-Christian nutters." In our order, we have many Christian members on an equal basis with Pagans, Jews, and Muslims.

As the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, our order practices Christian mysteries that are part and parcel of the traditional Golden Dawn. What SRIA fanatics and their McGoldenDawn trolls hate most, is that the teachings and curriculum of the Alpha Omega go far beyond the well known Regardie material that dead ends at Adeptus Minor (5=6) - which is ALL they have to offer their students.

In the AO, we are far more than JUST Golden Dawn. We are also ALPHA OMEGA. Our mysteries do not dead end where published material leaves off, as in the McGoldenDawn orders controlled by the SRIA. In the Alpha Omega, we initiate and teach in each and every Golden Dawn grade all the way through Magus (9=2) and beyond!

And the mysteries of the ALPHA OMEGA are not JUST those of the Golden Dawn. Why, after all, the Greek letters, ALPHA and OMEGA instead of, for example, Aleph and Tauv? The letters Alpha and Omega allude to additional PAGAN mysteries taught exclusively in the AO...

... Pagan mysteries that Nazi style Christians like SRIA have tried to destroy for 2,000 years!

Sheer envy of our Pagan mysteries is one reason why extremist Christian nutters of SRIA have attacked our order for decades now. They have published our rituals and whatever of our mysteries they could find. They have tried in court to take away our right to call ourselves Golden Dawn. They have defamed our leaders on the internet and our founder, S.L. MacGregor Mathers in self-published attack books.

Jewish members of our order have warned us about the dangers of SRIA historical revisionists like Nick Farrell and Peregrin Wildoak. Our Jewish brethren have seen first hand the lies historical revisionists have spread in recent years about the Jewish Holocaust in Germany. Thus, they warn us of the dangers of allowing SRIA historical revisionists to rewrite the history the Pagan Holocaust or even of the of the Alpha Omega.

KKK and SRIA: Racist Christianity Unmasked

It is in this light that we must consider statements that SRIA Grand Inquisitor Peregrin wrote today:"In the European past, when modern (i.e. post Medieval) magic developed Christianity was the filter through which all other religions and spiritual systems were viewed. It so infused the lives, language, outlook and social interactions of everyone from serf to Queen, they had little choice. So all the recently discovered texts and remnants of ancient 'mysteries' were viewed, consciously or unconsciously through a Christian based lens."The above represents a most insidious form of hate filled propaganda. First off, Peregrin redefines magic as though it fell out of the air after Centuries of Pagan Holocaust, and thus could not possibly be Pagan in origin.

No. According the the Nazi style Christian theology of Peregrin Wildoak and his SRIA handlers, ALL modern magic is of Christian origin!

Give me a break! Just how stupid do Nazi Christians think people are?

SRIA Grand Inquisitor Peregrin continues:"Well, this is kinda awkward considering the number of historical and modern groups and individuals who have lineage and past lives going back to these non-existent "Egyptian Mysteries".In order to further SRIA's racist Christian agenda, Peregrin is here taking an extreme reconstructionist point of view, arguing in effect that no pure elements of ancient Paganism have survived since antiquity. This notion is laughable coming from a non-initiate, as I have reminded Peregrin and over and over in the past. I guess Peregrin believes that if he repeats a lie long enough, it might one day sprout wings and become true.

Merely because the idol of academia Peregrin worships does not have access to the oath bound material of surviving Pagan traditions, does not mean that they do not exist. And even the work of Peregrin's idol, Ronald Hutton does not prove that no elements of Pagan antiquity survived in Italy either. As Hutton himself has admitted, such a matter is beyond the scope of his expertise. On the contrary, ethno-historian Prof. Paolo Portone has presented important evidence indicating ancient Pagan continuity in Italy, despite the Pagan Holocaust.

Moreover, a forthcoming paper by Dianus del Bosco Sacros sheds important new light on Peregrin's vacuous SRIA argument against Pagan survival. I will provide a like to this article once the journal appears in the near future.

Even without this exciting new anthropological data, Peregrin's SRIA thesis nonetheless remains thoroughly flawed. Peregrin's absurd SRIA argument of a "Christian origin" of ALL modern magic was discredited long ago by Professor Morton Smith of Cornell University in his work "Jesus the Magician." Jesus the Magician is a thoroughly documented and fascinating account of the multiple parallels of ancient Pagan Magic practices and how these practices are woven into the "Gospels", or "gods spells" and the "magical spells of Jesus the Magician".

Contrary to Peregrin's SRIA argument that modern Egyptian mysteries are but a Christian reformulation, it is in reality Christianity itself that is but a reformulation of ancient Egyptian and other Pagan mysteries. Take, in conclusion, the mythical story of the life of Jesus Christ himself, which has been stolen nearly wholesale from Egyptian myths of the life of Horus.

* Both were conceived of a virgin.
* Both were the "only begotten son" of a god (either Osiris or Yahweh)
* Horus's mother was Meri, Jesus's mother was Mary.
* Horus's foster father was called Jo-Seph, and Jesus's foster father was Joseph.
* Both foster fathers were of royal descent.
* Both were born in a cave (although sometimes Jesus is said to have been born in a stable).
* Both had their coming announced to their mother by an angel.
* Horus; birth was heralded by the star Sirius (the morning star). Jesus had his birth heralded by a star in the East (the sun rises in the East).
* Ancient Egyptians celebrated the birth of Horus on December 21 (the Winter Solstice). Modern Christians celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25.
* Both births were announced by angels (this si nto the same as number 7).
* Both had shepherds witnessing the birth.
* Horus was visited at birth by "three solar deities" and Jesus was visited by "three wise men".
* After the birth of Horus, Herut tried to have Horus murdered. After the birth of Jesus, Herod tried to have Jesus murdered.
* To hide from Herut, the god That tells Isis, "Come, thou goddess Isis, hide thyself with thy child." To hide from Herod, an angel tells Joseph to "arise and take the young child and his mother and flee into Egypt."
* When Horus came of age, he had a special ritual where his eye was restored. When Jesus (and other Jews) come of age, they have a special ritual called a Bar Mitzvah.
* Both Horus and Jesus were 12 at this coming-of-age ritual.
* Neither have any official recorded life histories between the ages of 12 and 30.
* Horus was baptized in the river Eridanus. Jesus was baptized in the river Jordan.
* Both were baptized at age 30.
* Horus was baptized by Anup the Baptizer. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist.
* Both Anup and John were later beheaded.
* Horus was taken from the desert of Amenta up a high mountain to be tempted by his arch-rival Set. Jesus was taken from the desert in Palestine up a high mountain to be tempted by his arch-rival Satan.
* Both Horus and Jesus successfully resist this temptation.
* Both have 12 disciples.
* Both walked on water, cast out demons, healed the sick, and restored sight to the blind.
* Horus "stilled the sea by his power." Jesus commanded the sea to be still by saying, "Peace, be still."
* Horus raised his dead father (Osiris) from the grave. Jesus raised Lazarus from the grave. (Note the similarity in names when you say them out loud. Further, Osiris was also known as Asar, which is El-Asar in Hebrew, which is El-Asarus in Latin.)
* Osiris was raised in the town of Anu. Lazarus was raised in Bethanu (literally, "house of Anu").
* Both gods delivered a Sermon on the Mount.
* Both were crucified.
* Both were crucified next to two thieves.
* Both were buried in a tomb.
* Horus was sent to Hell and resurrected in 3 days. Jesus was sent to Hell and came back "three days" later (although Friday night to Sunday morning is hardly three days).
* Both had their resurrection announced by women.
* Both are supposed to return for a 1000-year reign.
* Horus is known as KRST, the anointed one. Jesus was known as the Christ (which means "anointed one").
* Both Jesus and Horus have been called the good shepherd, the lamb of God, the bread of life, the son of man, the Word, the fisher, and the winnower.
* Both are associated with the zodiac sign of Pisces (the fish).
* Both are associated with the symbols of the fish, the beetle, the vine, and the shepherd's crook.
* Horus was born in Anu ("the place of bread") and Jesus was born in Bethlehem ("the house of bread").
* "The infant Horus was carried out of Egypt to escape the wrath of Typhon. The infant Jesus was carried into Egypt to escape the wrath of Herod. Concerning the infant Jesus, the New Testament states the following prophecy: 'Out of Egypt have I called my son.'"
* Both were transfigured on the mount.
* The catacombs of Rome have pictures of the infant Horus being held by his mother, not unlike the modern-day images of "Madonna and Child."
* Noted English author C. W. King says that both Isis and Mary are called "Immaculate".
* Horus says: "Osiris, I am your son, come to glorify your soul, and to give you even more power." And Jesus says: "Now is the Son of Man glorified and God is glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will glorify the Son in himself, and will glorify him at once."
* Horus was identified with the Tau (cross).

Notes On Pantheacon 2010 A Good Time Had By All

Notes On Pantheacon 2010 A Good Time Had By All
Well, I am back from Pantheacon today, although quite exhausted and tired from the long journey (a brutal 9 hour connecting flight) and the over-all lack of sleep due to adjusting to a two hour time difference, and the fact that there was just too much going on to get a decent night's sleep. That being said, I will limp through the next couple of days and regain my rest and sanity incrementally.

So even though my brains feel like mush, I wanted to say a few things about my experience at the Con, talk about my classes and mention a few notables who impressed me. I met several really wonderful people while talking, visiting and attending lectures, and I learned some new things that I would also like to share with my readers. (Yes, I am always learning new things, not to mention having to amend or revise my opinions about various topics.)

First, I would like to mention that I was quite impressed with the workshops and the depth of knowledge as presented by three individuals who I had not previously crossed paths with. These were Athena Wallinder, Ivo Dominguez Jr and Donald Frew. All three gave presentations that were, in my opinion, quite unique and enlightening. I also attended the last few minutes of Dr. Jehon Gris's presentation and purchased his multimedia CD of the lecture, which I intend on perusing at my leisure. I also got to spend some time with my good friend Tony Mierzwicki, who put on a presentation about Egyptian initiation rites, including stepping us all through an interesting egg spell from the PGM. Tony is by far probably one of the most adept and capable ritual magicians that I have met in some time, and his sole book is probably one of the greatest classics on magick that I have seen in quite some time. You find his book on amazon dot com here.

Athena Wallinder is a wonderful, zany, humorous, artistic, creative and brilliant occultist. Her knowledge is as wide as it is deep and insightful. Although she seems to be kind of jocular and funny much of the time, she is also quite deadly serious about her magickal practice. She is an Enochian magician and a goetic sorcereress of some note, you can find one of her web sites here. Athena actually set up a goetic temple in the middle of a moderately sized presentation room and stepped the attendees through the creation of a seal for the demon Buer, who is reputed to be a healing spirit. She was dressed in the expected garb of a sorceress, somewhat stylish and quite outlandish.

The first slide in her presentation was an image of the current Catholic pope with the word "Fear" emblazoned across the top, as a way to remind folks that having an open mind and approaching things with a bit of courage is important if one seeks to traffic with goetic demons. It was also ironic and quite funny. I suspect that more folks were probably more inimical and afraid of the pope than goetic demons. What I learned from her is that of the list of goetic demons, some of them are harsh and some are more compassionate, such as Buer or Vassago. I also noticed that she uses Egyptian gods and other reclaimed infernal entities as a means of self empowerment and magickal control. This is, of course, perfectly in alignment with some of my own opinions about goetic magick. I have discussed demons as a compete class of spirits instead of also looking at them as individuals, an omission that I will have to rectify and amend my opinions on this topic. Much of what I have stated in past articles I still believe today, but there are details and nuances to ponder in the days to come. Athena hasn't changed my mind, but has powerfully opened it to other possibilities.

Ivo Dominguez Jr has been around the east coast pagan community for quite a number of years. This was the first time that I got to attend one of his presentations as well as be introduced to him and his perspectives on magick. I found his presentation to be very well thought out, concisely structured and extremely hilarious. Ivo had a number of very funny and even outrageous stories to tell, all of them quite relevant to the topic, I might add, which was practical earth based magick. Ivo's main talking point was that simple and basic magick is available to everyone, and should be practiced and used to soften the hard edges of life and open one up to life's many opportunities. He discussed an important point that to work earth based magick one needs to focus on energies and spirits that are close to the earth instead of more attempting to use the remote godheads or higher level spirits, such as angels or demigods.

I met Ivo the next morning and had a brief chat with him. I found that we were both in agreement on a lot of the areas of basic earth magick, that timing had a lot to do with one's greater fortune. I found Ivo's knowledge to be breathtakingly expansive. He knows basic practical forms of earth magick and he also is quite conversant with just about any other occult topic as well. I found him to be something of an understated expert in the discipline of astrology, which I also use extensively in my occult practices. Ivo is brilliant and also very down to earth, with a very clever and earthy sense of humor. I recommend his teachings, books and an opportunity to have tea or coffee with him in the future. His website can be found at this location.

Don Frew put on a brief presentation about how Neoplatonism is very important to both modern occultism and to earth based spirituality, such as wicca and neopaganism. He covered the history of neoplatonism, including the various greater luminaries of that philosophical system who lived in the first four centuries of the common era. He also compared the main features of that system of philosophy with modern witchcraft and magick. Since I have been a major proponent of what I call the union of being, representing the source and ultimate destiny of all spirits and godheads, it was good to know that my beliefs are not an outlier, and that they are well represented by neoplatonic philosophy. I will definitely have to examine this topic in much greater detail now that I have been shown the important of neoplatonism and the teachings of the Neoplatonists. Don is a Covenant of the Goddess National Interfaith Representative and witchcraft elder.

As for myself, I presented three workshops during the Pantheacon convention. I have already stated what these presentations were about and when they were to be presented. I will say this about each of them.

22 Steps of the Cycle of Initiation - Transformative Journeys: Friday 3:30 pm. This was my first class and it was probably my weakest performance. I was admittedly a bit tired and had not gone over the workshop notes before performing it, so in my own opinion I was not as prepared as I should have been. I focused too much on my notes and attempted to read from them too often, even though I knew the material pretty much by heart. I was not as accessible nor did I exhibit my rather infamous dry humor. I was a bit too keyed up and unable to relax. However, I still managed to present all of the material and I did succeed in communicating to the audience some very useful points and perspectives. I was somewhat disappointed by my performance, but others who attended didn't seem to notice it as much as I did. The workshop was adequately attended, since the bulk of the attendees probably had not yet arrived to the convention. Anyway, I vowed to make certain that the next workshop would be much better presented. I had some ideas. Seeing the other presentations also really helped gel in my mind what I needed to do to present a better workshop. Keep in mind that this was the first presentation that I had done in quite a number of years, so I was a bit rusty, but the overall structure of the workshop was quite sound and allowed me plenty of time to present all of the necessary ideas.

The next workshop was the Art of Ritual Evocation: Saturday 9:00 pm. This workshop was well attended and I was well prepared for it. I had considered this workshop to be probably the hardest one to pull off, so I had gone over the notes quite thoroughly. So when it came time to give the presentation, I was confident, relaxed, funny and accessible. I talked to the attendees instead of talking to my notes. Audience response was good, the questions were relevant and thoughtful, and there was time to go over most of the material. What I didn't do was go over the history of the grimoires, since I had mentioned them at various points of my talk and there wasn't any time left to make an exhaustive study. What I did focus on was how individuals would use the old grimoires to perform magickal evocation. How I was able to put together a system of magick that allowed me to invoke spirits through a matrix and actually symbolically generate them. This concept was well received and opened a lot of eyes, since my audience consisted of mostly wiccan and neopagans, who were not too crazy about using the old grimoires to perform evocation. I was very pleased by my performance, since it represented what I needed to do in order to be confident and prepared. It also went a long way in restoring my confidence in my ability to give fun and informative presentations.

The last workshop was Elemental Magick - Using the Energy Theory of Magick: Monday 9:00 am. This workshop was surprisingly well attended, although not like the previous one - of course. I was pretty exhausted by this time, but I went over the material in the morning before my presentation, and drank a large cup of coffee, which seemed to revive me somewhat. However, I knew the material very well, having explained it to people and written about it for quite a number of years. Even though I was tired, I managed to give a good presentation and made certain that the attendees understood how an elaborated energy model of magick could be used to refine and focus the magick worked. I explained the importance of qualifying the energy via the four elements and also shaping and giving it a vector. I also touched on the basics of crystal magick and how more advanced systems of magick might be deployed using these structures in a more advanced methodology. I also brought together the ritual structures covered in the previous two workshops and showed how the gateway and the elemental octagon were used in conjunction with the septagon to generate the body and mind of the spirit. There were a few attendees who had attended all three and I could the lights turn on in their eyes when I pulled all of these threads together. For me it was the most gratifying thing that I personally experienced in all three of my classes.

So that was Pantheacon 2010 in a nutshell. I believe that I will seek to attend next year's gathering, and see what new workshops I can present as well as attend.

My Birthday Girl New Tattoo

My Birthday Girl New Tattoo
One of Chelseas artsy homecoming pictures I took yeeeears ago.

I spent yesterday hanging out with my girl Chelsea, today was her birthday. She is a great girl, full of sunshine and fun, and also one tough cookie. We went out to lunch and chatted laughed, and the radio played nothing but her favorite songs, how very cool.

One of the things that she did was to go get a Crohns Awareness tattoo. Some of you might remember an article I wrote for the Llewellyn Magical Almanac years ago about Magical Body art, this is the daughter I mention in that article. She has many beautiful tattoos now. She's also a model for many of my pieces of art, and the cover girl for my book The Voice of the Trees Companion, out this September.

Voice of the Trees Companion

So what is Crohns Disease you ask? Crohns Disease is a cronic inflammation of the intestines that can become quite serious, she was diagnosed 3 years ago (has it been three years?) and spent a week in the hospital, including her birthday. Not a nice birthday present. I remember the worry, the chair I slept in, the big can of baked beans her grandpa brought as a gag gift, the iPod from her grandma loaded with funny movies, Young Frankenstein and Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. I remember the rubber glove balloons and sherbet that the nurses brought her, and especially I remember her unwavering spirit that kept her and I laughing through much of a" very tough time."

Chelsea modeled for this card for Voice of the Trees, it's about facing down your fears, she went into the hospital when I was working on this one.

She's planning on attending school soon to pursue a degree in cosmetology. Right now she works as a manager at a fast food restaurant, and even on bad days, she is friendly and focused on her job, and Gods help any kid who comes in for their shift complaining about being tired or not feeling good because they partied to hard the night before. "Oh, really, well I have Crohns Disease and feeling really bad today myself, and I'm still smiling and working, so knock it off and get on that grill!" All said with her trademark enchanting smile and a flash of the eye. She takes it all in stride.

Chelsea and I at a festival years ago, she's a great assistant.

So her tattoo? It's a dark purple ribbon for Crohns awareness and text that reads, "I've got guts" Yes, it really has a double meaning, that's her sense of humor, I love it.

Happy Birthday Chelsea, you are a shining light when all other lights have gone out!

Here is a link to the Crohns Awareness website, if you or anyone you love has it, share it with them, lots of good information. It's an important cause for me, not just Chelsea, but my mom has it too, and I have IBS, so bad guts, good hearts!

The Smokescreen Of Atheism

The Smokescreen Of Atheism
It is rather depressing to see that even in the America of 2008 politicians can gain mileage from scapegoating atheists. Scapegoating a minority, no matter how distrusted or despised it may be, suggests that many Americans have learned little from history. Perhaps the revisionist history pushed by Christian extremists has something to do with this, but that can be addressed in another post. For now, I simply want to suggest that atheism is often used as a sort of smokescreen behind which to conceal unpleasant truths, rally support, and perpetuate ignorance.

Rep. Monique Davis (D-Chicago) may seem like an unlikely source for anti-atheist bigotry, but her words indicate otherwise. In discussing atheist Rob Sherman's efforts to preserve the separation of church and state, Rep. Davis had the following exchange:

DAVIS: I don't know what you have against God, but some of us don't have much against him. We look forward to him and his blessings. And it's really a tragedy - it's tragic - when a person who is engaged in anything related to God, they want to fight. They want to fight prayer in school.

I don't see you (Sherman) fighting guns in school. You know?

I'm trying to understand the philosophy that you want to spread in the state of Illinois. This is the Land of Lincoln. This is the Land of Lincoln where people believe in God, where people believe in protecting their children.... What you have to spew and spread is extremely dangerous, it's dangerous-

SHERMAN: What's dangerous, ma'am?

DAVIS: It's dangerous to the progression of this state. And it's dangerous for our children to even know that your philosophy exists! Now you will go to court to fight kids to have the opportunity to be quiet for a minute. But damn if you'll go to [court] to fight for them to keep guns out of their hands. I am fed up! Get out of that seat!

SHERMAN: Thank you for sharing your perspective with me, and I'm sure that if this matter does go to court-

DAVIS: You have no right to be here! We believe in something. You believe in destroying! You believe in destroying what this state was built upon. Not exactly what I'd expect to hear from a Chicago Democrat. This is clearly anti-atheist bigotry, but it is more than that. By blaming atheism for society's ills, Rep. Davis escapes the responsibility she might have as a politician. She gets to rally support among the majority of Americans who hate atheists. She also gets to ignore the subject of Sherman's efforts - protecting the Constitution. As she makes Sherman into the enemy, the focus shifts away from the unlawful infusion of religion into government she evidently supports.

Hungarian Politician Call For A Jew List Sparks Protests

Hungarian Politician Call For A Jew List Sparks Protests

Condescending 10,000 take come out to an anti-Nazi assert in Budapest to educate in opposition to a invoice of a far-right proceed to propose lists of Hungarian Jews who may represent a "deposit try". The government and opposition parties each one combined the gripe.

It all started each time Marton Gyongyosi of the of the Hungarian Bounce for a Take a breather Hungary (Jobbik), the country's major far-right get-together, unambiguous that it was time to connoisseur "how load everyday of Jewish origin in attendance are stylish, added in the Hungarian conference and the Hungarian government, who represent a mechanical national deposit try."

Gyongyosi argued that this was basic equally of the tensions formerly an eight-day folding on Gaza. He too assumed that Hungary's Unknown Ministry had rushed to make an pledge of devotion to Israel."

Overdue the declaration, Gyongyosi issued an sorrow, but self-possessed reaffirmed that Hungary desires to be secretive of "Zionist Israel and frequent dollop it too from stylish."

The bitterness that satan has fomented in them, the Member of the aristocracy preference push bold to its be contiguous infer. Solely as Pharaoh was particular an take it easy to let the Israelites go, his center chronic and he refused. As 1 Samuel 6:6 says, "Why be required to you resolved your hearts as the Egyptians and Pharaoh chronic their hearts? Overdue he had dealt uninvitingly with them, did they not send the everyday disallowed, and they departed?"

Matthew Henry says of the Samuel verse, "Sinners fold out their own miseries by refusing to part with their sins." At a mean God deems clean and tidy, He ends the be at war with and decides for them, kind the determination He sees they destitution. Sometimes this includes pushing bold what is prior to in their hearts to a infer. The common Harass preference be a time each time humanity's God-hating, sin-loving choices preference be brought bold to steep the cup of ire to the top. Overdue Image 13, humanity's choices preference displayed in black and white, (gradient the Make of the Hog, or not), their hearts preference be set famine strong, and in attendance preference be no leaving back.

Quite a few examples of how God pushes bold what is prior to in their hearts can be found in Isaiah 19:14-

"The Member of the aristocracy has poured participating in them a spirit of dizziness; they make Egypt hesitate in all that she does, as a drunkard staggers influence in his vomit."

And Ezekiel 38:21,

"I preference summon a sword in opposition to Gog on all my mountains, declares the Member of the aristocracy GOD. Every one man's sword preference be in opposition to his brother."

And Zechariah 12:2a,

"I am leaving to make Jerusalem a cup that sends all the encompassing peoples reeling."

It seems that the protests in Hungary fit the dream on top of. What time over, Jerusalem makes the encompassing peoples reel, as in this banner too, each time Palestinian Authority's Abbas assumed that their Regular Give Dither IN EAST JERUSALEM.

The bitterness of Jews we see insurrectionary so fast is not a not public one. It is all a spiritual combat. Endlessly learn, "we do not clash in opposition to flesh and blood, but in opposition to the rulers, in opposition to the founding, in opposition to the considerable powers exceptional this present cloudiness, in opposition to the spiritual forces of evil in the appetizing seats." (Ephesians 6:12)

Now is the time to learn that Ephesians verse each and every day.

The Hungarian elected official did not ask for the "Jew-list" equally he abruptly sincere to become be suspicious of of Jews, it was satan's expert which put that on his center. The protests by the Hungarians were not in opposition to the elected official who had asked for the "Jew-list" but were armed by Jewish and open groups

The proceed of one of the fan parties in Hungary who participated in the gripe assumed, "He addition that "genocide is forever preceded by lists," arguing that it was tactless that "everyday be required to collapse to learn the lessons of the farther than 100 days."

It is tactless. But they preference self-possessed collapse to learn, equally satan preference endure to aggravate bitterness of God's everyday. And the lists, I delight that in the Harass the lists preference be big. Who can buy or trade, who is a Christian or a Jew...

God is lenient. "And the Member of the aristocracy voted for by prior him, and proclaimed, The Member of the aristocracy, The Member of the aristocracy God, sociable and lenient, longsuffering, and abundant in integrity and truth," (Exodus 34:6)

But He has exactly a Day each time His ire preference gradient exceptional from His lenient. Seeing that we read of accomplishments famine that gripe in Hungary and the on the rise provocation for rounding up the Jews, we can hard by "see "the evil spirit when poured out by satan. God's aim is advancing and that ability our prayers be required to become advance deep too.

"My influence shalt thou entertain in the originate, O LORD; in the originate preference I sharp my prayer unto thee, and preference thud up." (Psalms 5:3)

Full Circle Finding Hellenism

Full Circle Finding Hellenism
I remember the day it happened. I was in college, first freshman year, sitting with a friend of mine in the Union. We'd been talking about some of the people I'd recently met through him, and the secret community to which they all belonged. My friend had glanced around quickly before lowering his head and his voice and saying, "There's a lot of Pagans around here."

I knew exactly what he meant, of course - it was like the Greek gods. I'd read all the myths I could get my hands on and even tried out some of that Norse stuff when I was a kid, but didn't like it as much. Sure, I knew what Pagans were, but I was sure that if people were making animal sacrifices in great, stone temples I would have noticed.

Of course I was at the same time completely right and completely wrong about Paganism. To learn, I soaked up "Drawing Down the Moon" by Margot Adler and a lot of much less substantive works. My early exposure was to a variety of Wiccan practices, which strengthened my love of the Earth and desire to defend the spirits of the land. My relationship with Herne and later, the Green Man, defined how I related to the world around me, but I was never a Wiccan. I enjoy Wiccan ritual and practice, and I respect that Wicca has given momentum to all manner of Pagan revival and reconstruction movements.

When I eventually discovered Hellenic polytheism, I was intrigued but not drawn to it particularly. Learning a new language is a pretty high barrier to entry for me, and the first group I met prayed in ancient Greek. It was also a couple decades after my interest in Greek religion had peaked, so I filed it away.

Starting this summer, though, I started getting clues that it's time to take a second look at the religion of some portion of my ancestors. Little snippets of conversation about gods I'd never heard of. Flashes of insight... while watching "Xena." Meeting a teacher who was offering a class in Hellenismos and didn't mind using English. Having a conversation with Margot Adler, who started me and many others on our Pagan paths, and having her tell me, "I've always been a Hellenistic pagan, but it just wasn't an option back then.

So in a way I'm beginning again, but more seriously this time, because for the first time in many, many years I feel like I'm not responsible for defining who it is I'm praying to. These gods have been around for a very long time, and I want to give them the latitude to be a bit set in their ways. I'm pretty okay with it. One of the things about Wiccanism which made it hard for me to anchor myself there was the amorphous identity of God and Goddess. They could be represented by specific deities, or be referenced by the broader terms developed in the 18th century like Great Goddess and Father Sky, but if the specific face keeps changing it's tough for me to develop a relationship.

Of course, I'm mindful that without many years of exposure to Wicca, I wouldn't have any basis of comparison. I'm grateful that it's the right choice for so many people, because it's also a visible conduit that helps all manner of seekers find what they're looking for.

Now what I'm discovering is that it's tough "not" to form relationships. I had originally believed that one god alone took the initiative to wave some ambrosia under my nose, but the more I meditate on it the more I see the work of several divine hands. There are certainly at least three that come to my thoughts almost daily, and I imagine that time will only expand those relationships. Just today I did some reading about Hermes, and how he comes to fill so many roles: luck, messages, soulbearing, thievery, cleverness. I was so intrigued that I bypassed Demeter and Athena to pray to Hermes, because he's the one that whispers the messages of the gods in our ears. So without pressure, and in a very organic way, I'm learning how to talk to each of them.

The one book I have read every night since I began this path is Devotion: Prayers to the Gods of the Greeks - it has a selection of prayers in English to each of the gods, a tremendous help for me. The one big stumbling block for me right now is mastering the pronunciations of the gods' names; even though I will be slow to learn ancient Greek, I want to get everybody's name right. It's simply about respect.

Does Evangelical Giving Do The World Good

Does Evangelical Giving Do The World Good

Image by carf via FlickrThis week, Barack Obama is expected to sign into law the GIVE Act, which aims to increase volunteering. It gives young people a way to pay for education with public service. Some right wingers have been squawking because the plan excludes religious activities like church attendance and outreach from the social service hours that can be applied for credit. Personally I'm relieved. I want my taxes to pay for programs with clear benefits, and I want the wall separating church and state repaired. But before we secular types get all high and mighty we should take a look at why some people think that faith based programs are necessary for the good of society.

Several studies (e.g. here and here) show that religious people give more dollars and volunteer hours to charity than do nonbelievers. Evangelical Christians have been trumpeting these findings: No matter what you may think about our exclusive offer of salvation, our religion is a social good.

As a former Evangelical I tend toward skepticism, especially when it comes to data that have been assembled and promoted by ideologues. And yet I'm inclined to suspect that these results tap something real. Sociologists have found that tribal identity increases altruism toward other members of the tribe (though at the expense of outsiders). In many ways, a religion functions as a tribe. Besides ordinary in-group/out-group effects, religions explicitly teach that we are made to serve something larger than ourselves. They encourage members to give of themselves to gods, co-religionists and others in part by promising deferred compensation. But perhaps even more importantly, they provide a community and structure for doing so.

Let's assume that religious people are more generous or altruistic. An interesting follow-up question is this: Where is this generosity directed? Does it serve the cause of goodness? By a scientific definition of altruism, suicide bombing is an altruistic act supported by religious attendance. It is the individual sacrificing his life (and reproductive potential) in the service of another individual or the greater collective--in this case Allah, Islam, the Muslim brotherhood. But is it as a social good?

A belief set can redirect altruistic do-gooder impulses away from activities that actually serve human well-being and onto activities that serve to replicate the belief set itself. Within conservative Christianity, a tremendous amount of donated time and money is solicited for conversion activities: Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Is religious recruiting a social good? On this, most evangelists and I would have opposite opinions, at least about Christian recruiting. (We might be more in agreement about the proselytizing done by Hare Krishnas or Scientologists.) It is only fair to give evangelical missionaries credit for their intentions. If you truly believe the unsaved are going to be tortured eternally, then there is no greater good than to spend your life saving their souls. By comparison, nothing else matters. A missionary, operating on this premise, may experience herself as highly generous, because she is.

She also might protest that independent of afterlife benefits, accepting Jesus makes people happy in this life, here and now. This is true. Sometimes. Jesus worship can fill people with deep joy. It can get alcoholics to stop drinking and abusers to stop abusing. It can save marriages. But sometimes the opposite happens. (See thousands of testimonials at exChristian.net). Pentecostals point to happy African church-going children singing and dancing. A former Pentecostal might point to the African children who have been kicked out of their communities or killed because new converts to Pentecostalism saw them as witches and took their took their Bibles literally. The net here and now benefits of proselytizing are arguable.

A darker way to look at Christian "outreach" is as an example of how viral beliefs, sometimes called meme complexes, can exploit the human tendency toward altruism. What I mean is that a belief set can redirect altruistic do-gooder impulses away from activities that actually serve human well-being and onto activities that serve to replicate the belief set itself. When the Asian tsunami hit, a highly successful Seattle mega church directed members to do three things: pray for people who were affected, give to Mars Hill Church, and give to the Mars Hill church-building work in India. Why not reverse this--pray for Mars Hill church, pray for our missionary work, and give money to the people who were affected? Churches that make suggestions like these are, on average shrinking. Churches that follow the Mars Hill model are growing.

Daniel Dennett in the first three pages of his book, "Breaking the Spell", beautifully narrates how a similar redirection occurs in nature. An ant climbs to the top of a stem of grass and lingers there. Why? Not because it is adaptive for the ant. Rather, another organism has take charge of the ant's brain and to reproduce it needs the ant to be eaten by a cow. When a person's altruistic impulses are directed toward winning converts, it is valid to ask whether they are actually serving human wellbeing or simply serving a mind virus.

If we don't count their recruiting activities, do Evangelical Christians actually give more than non-religious? Do they give more to things that we humans pretty much agree are social goods? Sorry, all you fellow secularists, thought the gap narrows the answer still appears to be yes. Besides outreach, giving to churches funds what economists call "club goods". Churches often do a wonderful job of providing and organizing members services: warm meals for kids with a sick parent, adventures for teenagers, housing for young adults, support during bereavement, even free counseling or legal services. And with regard to outsiders, even if food, medical care, or friendship is offered primarily as bait to set a fish hook, the food and medical care are real.

But even beyond the money given to churches, religious people appear to give more to ordinary charities than secular folks do. At least based on self report data, religious participation and religious giving are positively correlated with giving to nonreligious charities like educational institutions, social services, even blood banks. This appears to hold true for the 40ish percent of Americans who self-describe as Evangelical or born again as well as their more theologically open counterparts. If this makes those of us who are freethinkers squirm a bit, perhaps it should.

You might protest that that charity should be only a way station on the road to justice, and that your energies are better spent working for structural change. Many secular folks and liberal people of faith believe this is true. I know I do. As a non-theist, I once sat on the nonprofit board of an organization called the Washington Association of Churches because their mission was my mission: Do justice, love mercy, walk humbly. Like me, they sought solutions that went beyond charity.

But even if justice is the destination, those way stations are still needed. Most of us agree that both generosity and justice are virtues. We prefer to live in a world where both are in rich supply. Maybe, now that freethinkers are coming out of the closet it is time for us to begin thinking about how to create our own communities and structures that empower personal generosity. Since we don't have a sales mandate or a promise of treasure laid up in Heaven, we--unlike many Christians--are free to give without expecting something back except maybe a bit of good will. Recently Seattle Atheists organized a blood drive for members. Now, that's what I'm talking about.
