Church Billboards

Church Billboards
Smithville Christian Church and its billboard. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Many of the larger churches around here have billboards on the larger roads around town, and many of the smaller ones have electronic signs that are visible to passing drivers. Some of these signs are merely advertisements, announcing what time services are held; however, most of them seem to be more general and appear to have the goal of getting people to believe in someone named Jesus. Using as few words as possible, they try to sell this Jesus character in much the same way any other advertiser sells goods or services.

Who is the intended audience for all this signage? I'm guessing it probably isn't atheists. Many of us are ex-Christians who have read their "holy" book and found it lacking. We're familiar with the pitch, and we aren't buying. I suspect many Christians must know that, even if they are reluctant to admit it. Perhaps the audience for these signs is more likely to be the sort of "cultural Christians" who profess belief when it suits them but live lives that are not appreciably different from non-Christians. Maybe the hope is that these signs will make them feel guilty or fearful enough to return.

The signs of the more fundamentalist churches often seem to include messages designed to induce guilt or fear. Hope is a popular message too, but it is usually linked to fear or guilt. The idea usually seems to be that Jesus will "save" the audience from their sins. Few of the signs I see offer messages as blunt as "believe or burn," although I have seen a few of those (and some with even more disturbing messages). Still, this sentiment seems to underlie many of them. You better accept this Jesus character soon because you are running out of time. And you don't want to know what will happen to you if you die without believing! Accept Jesus or else.

One of the things that surprises me about these billboards is how few of them seem to be aimed at providing positive, affirming messages to Christians. My favorite atheist billboards have always been those with a message like, "Don't believe in gods? You are not alone" (here's one example and here's another). I wish we had a few of these billboards around here, as there are certainly days when I could use such a reminder!

Maybe the Christians responsible for the church billboards and signs recognize that the Christian faithful do not need such messages in a region where Christian privilege is so pervasive. Such messages might be helpful for Christians in some parts of the U.S., but Mississippi is unlikely to be one of them.

Self Serving Pomposity

Self Serving Pomposity
Kevin DeYoung reconsiders the thesis of a book I read soon after its publication, Elton Trueblood's "The Humor of Christ" (1964):.... Trueblood, who pays close attention to the gospel narratives and dialogues, makes a convincing case that Christ often used irony, purposeful exaggeration, and humorous parables, and knew how to engage in witty conversations where he gave as good as he got.

In particular, Trueblood argues, Jesus exemplified the great virtue of helping others to laugh at vanity. Because humans are given the gift of self-consciousness, we are prone to pride and vanity. But with this self-consciousness also comes the ability to laugh at conceit.

Christ was demonstrating one of the universal elements of His humor when He served the cause of true religion by exposing the pompous person whose profession far exceeds his practice....Vanity is a great weakness of mankind in general, but it seems especially ludicrous when it appears among the professionally religious. The contradiction between man's humility before God and his strutting before men is a perfect opening for ridicule, and Jesus employed it to perfection in the twenty-third chapter of Matthew's Gospel. (35-36)Satire, sarcasm, irony, hyperbole-these are dangerous weapons, only to be wielded in spiritual warfare with caution and with great aplomb. But they are to be wielded at times. To poke fun at the oh-so-important, the perpetually offended, and the self-righteously sentimental can be good, godly work. When it comes to poking at the pretensions of the proud, laughter is often the best medicine. Vanity cannot be reasoned with, but it can be mocked. In the presence of overwrought solemnity and self-serving pomposity, Christ shows that a little humor goes a long ways. [more]And, of course, we are often (I am often) in the position of the one who needed to be mocked.

Another of Trueblood's books I appreciated was "A Place to Stand."

St Epiphanios Of Salamis Preface To The Panarion

St Epiphanios Of Salamis Preface To The Panarion
Greetings in the Lord from Epiphanios to his highly esteemed brothers and fellow presbyters, Masters Acacius and Paul!

By drawing up a preface, or set of remarks, as a sort of title, ancient authors would give a glimpse of the whole work following through their riddle. Hence, beloved, since I am the same sort, I am writing you a preface to give the gist of my treatise against sects. Since I shall be telling you the names of the sects and exposing their unlawful deeds like poisons and toxic substances, matching the antidotes with them at the same time - cures for those who are already bitten, and preventatives for those who will have this experience - I am drafting this Preface here for the scholarly, to explain the "Panarion", or chest of remedies for the victims of wild beasts' bites. It is a work in three volumes and contains eighty sects which stand symbolically for wild animals or snakes.

But "one after the eighty" is at once the foundation of the truth, the teaching and the saving treatment of it, and Christ's "holy bride", the Church. The Church has always been, but was revealed in due course by Christ's incarnation, during the period of these sects. I mention it in connection with the preaching of Christ. And again, after all the iniquities of these sects, I give a concise, clear account of it in accordance with the apostles' teaching, to refresh those who have read through all the laborious work on the sects.

Please, all you scholarly readers of the Preface, the Sects that follow it, and the Defense of the Truth, Exposition of the Truth, and Faith of the Holy Catholic Church, I am only human, and am trying my best to defend true religion, with hard work and zeal from God. I beg your pardon if I attempt too much in my desire to make the best defense I can in the all-holy, all-august Name itself. For God allows me this, though I am investigating matters too difficult for me, since my discussion is for truth's sake, and my work is for the sake of piety.

And further, if you should find - it is surely not my way to mock people or make fun of them. But please pardon me if, from anger over the sects and for the reader's protection, I should speak under provocation, or call certain persons "frauds", or "scum" or "pathetic". It is the very necessity for the words of the debate that puts me in such a sweat - to protect the reader and show that their practices, mysteries and teachings are the furthest thing from my mind. Also to prove my independence of them by those words and the intensity of my opposition, and wean some people away from them, precisely by the words that appear too harsh.

Listening Prayer Therapy Vs Cognitive Therapy

Listening Prayer Therapy Vs Cognitive Therapy

LPT - DEVELOP YOUR OWN APPROACH

This is an invitation. Develop you own approach to Listening Prayer Therapy. Try out the tools that I have used and make them your own. You then have 'Your Approach."

LPT - and Cognitive Therapy

My gift is to penetrate theory and understand the essence, the key, and the nugget. What is key to the effectiveness of Cognitive Therapy? It is the focus on belief.

The theory, which I support fully, is that belief drives behaviour. But there is more. Core belief defines identity (self esteem issues.) Beliefs are expressed in feelings and a belief lies behind each of our negative feelings. Beliefs shape our perspective - our perceptual glasses - our seeing. Thus beliefs are self-perpetuating - we see what confirms our belief. Finally by the power of expectations, life happens to confirm our beliefs.

My understanding, then, is that the Cognitive Therapist makes a wise and strategic choice to focus counselling on belief systems that underlie behaviour.

Third Generation Inner Healing shares this focus on belief. In the healing of a memory we deal with the belief - what seemed true at the time of the event. If you do not focus on the beliefs when doing healing of a memory then you do not 'get' Listening Prayer Therapy.

The way that LPT (Listening Prayer Therapy) deals with beliefs is with revelation rather than cognition. A cognitive approach may take months or several years to break down a belief. Cognitive Therapy - the best that Psychology has to offer at the moment - takes persistence and much professional time (and expense) to be effective. But it is effective.

When Listening Prayer Therapy uses revelation to deal with beliefs is it looks like this. "Jesus this is what I believe but I want your perspective. What is your truth?" If one truly listens - rather than think up the right answer - then one can receive the Rhema, the active, living spoken 'word of God' that is effective in shattering wrong belief and giving one God's perspective. It happens 'in an instant.'

People think going to therapy is tough.

The inner forces that keep us from therapy are strong. We think therapy is tough. That is because:

1. Humility is involved. Pride blocks us.

2. We are dealing with self-condemnation. Fear of judgment blocks us.

3. We don't know where to start. Feelings of inadequacy and helplessness block us.

4. We are putting ourselves in the hands of another. Trust is an issue.

5. There are costs: financial, time, energy. Our 'Poverty Complex' blocks us.

6. I am investing in myself so my lack of self-esteem hinders me.

7. On top of this all our patterns of rationalization, denial, and avoidance, game playing and self-sabotage stand in our way.

I think life without therapy is tough!

So it looks to us, feels to us like getting into therapy is tough. But I know what is worse and that is what happens when I don't get into therapy. Life can get really tough when God plays hardball. "Hard ball?" That is when we reap the emotional, social, spiritual and financial consequences of our failure to step up to the plate and get our stuff dealt with. That is messy!

Graphic Novel News 2000Ad Devlin Waugh Gets A Re Release

Graphic Novel News 2000Ad Devlin Waugh Gets A Re Release
"DEVLIN WAUGH GETS A RE-VAMP AND A RE-RELEASE WITH NEW MATERIAL..."

"He's a dandy. He's a bon viveur. He's a vampire! Say hello again to 2000 AD's jolly fine monster hunter and patron of the finer arts, Devlin Waugh!

Unlike any other British comics character, Devlin is the provocative, violent, sexy, brooding hero from the twisted minds of 2000 AD and British comics icons John Smith (New Statesmen, Scarab) and Sean Phillips (Fatale, Criminal).

Unavailable for a number of years but now re-scanned and digitally cleaned, this is a brand new full colour edition of this classic story for the UK and Ireland - with additional material! It also presents stories drawn by 2000 AD legend, Steve Yeowell (Zenith, Judge Dredd) and Michael Gaydos (Alias, Daredevil).

It is 2114 and the vast Mega-Cities are home to the final throngs of humanity - but these are mere playground for bestial forces from beyond the realms of damnable decency! Thankfully such things are kept at bay by spiritual envoys employed by Vatican City, such as Devlin Waugh - a Brit-Cit-born occult investigator who does a brisk trade in flying fisticuffs and fine fashion!

When Vatican City precognitive telepaths predict a horrific presence at the underwater prison of Aquatraz in the Caribbean, Devlin is sent in to investigate and uncovers an uncompromising evil which will probably cause him to cancel elevenses and throw away the Marquess of Queensberry's rulebook in order to survive!

Waugh is a firm fan favourite at 2000 AD and the unique mix of horror, comedy, and action makes this a classic that deserves to be in any graphic novel collection."

The book comes out on 10th April and we'll have a review for you soon.

BHANGARH Stronghold, INDIA

The ruins of Bhangarh Stronghold in the Rajasthan flap in India are personal for seeing that the top figure wanted place in south Asia. According to one of the myths, Bhangarh was cursed by Guru Balu Nath (BABA BALANATH), who for yourself officer the construction but warned that his sacred meditating place lies current and call for the palace hang the volume which would cast a shadow big stacks to hang his unmentionable retreat, the community would fall dressed in blot. Rough of the hint, Ajab Singh - one of dynasty's family tree raised the palace to a horizontal that cast the shadow on the Balu Nath's retreat and the community was cursed. Represent are various other myths and myths that free the reasons why the fort was disorderly overnight and never re-inhabited, but they all point circular the fact that the community was cursed and is now phantom by ghosts.

Stable the armed forces is frightened - The Congregation of India meet to put the myth of ghosts intense the Bhangarh Decrepitude to rest by deploying the armed forces to control the fort at night. On the other hand, none of the Indian armed forces place of work dared to illustration in this strength of mind busting treatment so the belief that it's phantom by ghosts is so life-threatening. Archaeological Information-gathering of India (ASI), the prim and proper majestic put together liable for money of monuments and ruins roundabouts the stately officially recognizes the Bhangarh Stronghold as a place phantom by ghosts. In the role of of that, no apartment if untaken within the ruins and even the size of ASI was built at a lovely disconnect from the fort, relatively of within it as is the explosive of other shut down sites.

Represent are warnings at all candidature points to the Bhangarh Stronghold advising dynasty not to consequence dressed in the community at night. THE Ear-piercing Bridge

Unconventional of Fairfield, Ohio on Maud Hughes Way is the particularly Ear-piercing Bridge It's said that the cry out that is heard is that of someone who has died at home. One of the paramount tragedies allied to the footbridge goes back to a demolish pack up in which two men were burnt to death having the status of the locamotive they were on exploded amongst West Chester and Gano. On the other hand, that pack up was in West Chester Civic (REAR CONNECT CIVIC). The Maud Hughes footbridge is in Interval Civic, yet one way or another, the pack up became official to this deal with.

Option tales sky us though that the high-pitched Bridge name came from one of various achievable other actions. Stories such as an arguing hook tour the footbridge, having the status of a being was hard-pressed, or crush, to her death. Or of out of the ordinary hook breach down at the footbridge, and the boyfriend deceased his girlfriend scheduled to go get help. When on earth he with returned, she was found on the brink by her neck from the footbridge. Yet out of the ordinary tells of a distrought mother throwing her up-to-the-minute immature person from the footbridge, so the screams you entertain are of her anxiety and eyesore of what she did.

In the role of these are all stories told of any chart of bridges circular the world, there's haughty. Intelligence of specter trains or engineers on the tracks underside. Orbs seen optimistic timetabled beneath the footbridge, timetabled with supposed Satanic rituals plunder place underside as well. Indolent other variations of the tales say that if you restrict on the footbridge, and trace your headlights 3 era, some form of strange task specter adopt. I wouldn't recomend strenuous though, the footbridge turns squat at either end, making it unused for oncoming lobby group to see you until they are privilege on you!

A 1909 pack up killed two engineers and harmed 3 others aboard a train on October 24th. One of the engineers killed was off assignment, hitching a transform back home to Middletown having the status of the roast locamotive exploded. It had been exclusively heavy with water having the status of it deceased Ivorydale in Cincinnati, but late about 11 miles out, a pastime had stressed out top figure of it, causing the current. That pack up wasn't the definitely tradgedy timetabled that shot of lineage. On June 7th. 1976, at the Princeton Way join in Interval Civic, a Penn Centeral hand was killed having the status of two rails protruding from a southbound work train penetrated the cab of the Northbound locamotive he was on.

So while I can't say no one had died at home, in fact, i'm definite they brag at some matter in time, but all these tales surrouding the footbridge call to be entitlement urban piece, or fleapit. But who's to say, late all, inhabitants specter trains and engineers brag to come from everywhere, perchance they are entitlement tiny by at home on thier way to the other side!

It is surely not for the timid and group see torture, achievement, and creepy medieval roughness timetabled the way. The Dungeons are some of Europe's give somebody the lowdown themed attractions give to group the end to wait a impressive cranium in the company of the darker wall up of history. The Bring to an end Flare of London, a Dinghy Pen to Hell, and the Mess of the Gone are all enormous multi-million beat themed attractions surrounded by dozens of other exhibits and tableaux. Who Am I Part 1 1

Who Am I Part 1 1
WHO AM I? (PART 1) - ? ( 1)

Who am I? What is the purpose of existence? What is my role in the same? How best can I play this role? For the last nine years, day and night these existential questions play in my system whether meditating, thinking, reading, working or discussing.... I presume that this must be true for many.

Answers and understandings of these issues have come to me in meditation with great emphasis and clarity. I must have examined these understandings thousands of time from all scientific and logical angles, but have not been able to change a millionth of its fraction. Since the time I have got these answers in meditation, I have used the mind for verification, validation, searching for the right words (however inadequate),explanation and logic to explain to myself. I am not a grammarian - I cannot create arguments, refute others nor quote scriptures, philosophers or religion. In short, I am not a wordsmith, not someone who could write a brilliant recipe book - but one who has tasted and experienced the truth, as I understand it.

Is this megalomania? Is this perversion of the mind? Is this some fanciful notion of thoughts playing in my mind as it does in everyone's mind - converted into "my" variety of truth? Am I playing mind games? Does my understanding stand up to the beacon of rationality and logic? Are these profound understanding or some kind of bullshit masquerading as one? Am I crazy?

These questions and more of its ilk grapple all the time and I look for answers in religious books like the BHAGAWAD GITA, VEDAS, UPANISHADS, THE DARSHANAS AND PHILOSOPHERS LIKE SRI AUROBINDO, J KRISHNAMURTHY, OSHO, SWAMI VIVEKANANDA AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS LIKE PARAMAHANS YOGANANDA, RAMANA MAHARSHI, SANT DNYANESHWAR, RAMKRISHNA PARAMHANSA, new found thinkers like Sadhguru, Maharishi Yogi, along with scientific understanding with Fritjof Capra, Roger Penrose, Ken Wilber along with findings of quantum physics and such.

So, over a series of blogs - I intend to share my thoughts on these 4 crucial questions - with critical analysis of the variants of current thought process.

For example on the question of "WHO AM I?" there are three broad philosophical strands.

1. MATERIALISM - understands everything in terms of material terms. Believes that the universe is a complex machine with only physical parts, subject to certain laws, therefore everything is based on the theory of Evolution. It has some drawbacks but is the genesis of great scientific progress.

2. RELIGION - a dualistic viewpoint of existence with a physical benevolent God being the creator and existence being the creation. Some have messengers and books as go-between Creator and creation. Has some amazing advantages in the devotion tradition but source of immense violence, separation, competition and exploitation.

3. SPIRITUALISM - a non - dualistic thought process which looks at each and every element of existence as being part of creator. Which deals with the energy / spirit of every being and works for inner clarity to discover the relationship between all forms of existence. Quantum physics has validated many of its worldview.

I received threats against my person at this Blog and was attacked and slandered publically by Stormfront, one of the most prominent hate groups in this country. I was referred to as a "Jew-loving sh..bag, an Ayn Rand capitalist materialist," and the "village communist." I never could figure out just how I could be a capitalist materialist and a communist at the same time. But then, logic isn't exactly a strong suit at Stormfront or any other hate group for that matter.

I am proud to stand with my Jewish brothers and sisters. And just as threats will not intimidate me from promoting and defending the Magisterial teaching of Christ's Church, so too I will not back down in fear when it comes to defending my elder brothers and sisters* in the Jewish Community.

Vendyl

The story of Vendyl Jones

Vendyl M. Jones, a native of Sudan, Texas, has been excavating the Caves of Qumran beside the Dead Sea for over twenty years. Vendyl and his Jewish wife, Zahava, live in Qiryat Bialiq, Israel and have their U.S. Office in Arlington, Texas. He holds both American and Israeli citizenship although he is a Christian and holds degrees in Divinity and Theology.

In 1977 Randolph Filmore, a free lance journalist volunteered to work at Jones' Qumran Excavation. He wrote a script about Jones and the excavation
"In Search For The Ashes of The Red Heifer." The script came out in the form of the movie "Raiders Of The Lost Ark" with another "Indiana Jones."

"That is a great movie," says Vendyl. "The main difference is that the show was really a drag as compared to our excavation. More than anything else, that was `fiction' while our excavation is fact."
In April, 1967, Vendyl moved his late wife, Lois, and five children to Israel so he could enroll in Hebrew University Department of Jewish Studies. His studies were interrupted in June '67 by the Six Day War. June 16, 1967 issue of TIME magazine featured Jones "as the only American to fight with the Israeli Army." Though color blind, he volunteered as a forward observer and in a matter of minutes on the front lines he spotted four Jordanian anti- personnel bunkers and sixty-six anti-tank bunkers that the Israeli Army had not seen. "I had a ring-side seat for half the duration of the war
three
days.
" He also served in the 1982 conflict in Lebanon. He remains active in high tech Israel defense projects, but refuses to discuss their particulars.

The Israeli Government commissioned Jones to do a texts information for the Israel tour guide course at Hebrew University. The project was extended to his being appointed as Southwest Director of the Government Tourist Office to develop college consortium programs between the Americans and Israeli universities in archaeological excavations in the Land.
Jones is considered as a foremost authority in Judaism as well as the geography, history and archaeology of the Land of Israel. In addition to his studies in Judaica at Hebrew University, he studied in the Lubervitchur Chabad Yeshiva and in Beit Kabballah, the two most Orthodox Rabbinic schools in Israel.

He pioneered the concept of Covenant Plurality which has of recent been accepted in three major denominations. "Covenant Plurality" says Jones, "is very simple. You simply interpret the Bible in the plain, ordinary, simple and normal meaning of the words. Don't add unstated meaning or `spiritualize'
the passages. Define the words based on the root of the original tongue.
Interpret the words based on the hermeneutical principles of each particular level. Do not conjure theological expressions into the text that are not stated. If one follows these principles he will conclude that every covenant God made with mankind is eternal and as valid today as when it was spoken."

"Jesus did not alter one jot or tittle of the Law and Prophets. Therefore, the church had no right to do so four centuries later as the Byzantine church fathers did. Nor do we have the right to do so today. If Jesus did not change it, theologians have no authority to do so."
"Covenant Plurality" means, that when God makes a deal He keeps it, and he did not put all his eggs in one basket.

Wahdatul Wujood And Islam

Wahdatul Wujood And Islam
Where is the creator of heavens and earth residing? The answer is written in the book of ALLAH the holy Quran about the istawa of ALLAH swt. But then, there is a class of people both Muslims and non Muslims, who propagate and believe in the idea of wahdatul wajood, which means that ALLAH is everywhere inside every living being. This point of view is a sheer contradiction to Quran and does not match the majesty of ALLAH swt. A creator cannot be part of creation because if it is so, then the majesty and the honor of creator cannot is nowhere.

To understand the status of ALLAH swt we will first describe those sufis who propagated the ideology of wahadatul wajoodiat. According to them everything is god. They based their metaphysical religion on this theory and their thoughts and teachings revolve around this ideology.

The wajoodi sufis (wahdatul wajood propagators) taught the lessons of love, peace humanity and oneness leaving all the disagreements and disputes behind because that's all an illusion. The peace and humanity can bring the scattered pieces of the one closer and finally can merge in the end.

But Quran has a very clear saying in this matter.

Where is ALLAH? Holy Quran says: 20:5

"The Most Gracious Rose (Istawa) above the Throne"

And another verse describes the same in these words

Holy Quran: 57:4

"He it is Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days and then rose (Istawa) over the Throne"

So these verses of Holy Quran explains the status and place of ALLAH swt which is totally opposite to what the wajoodi sufis think. In another place, ALLAH swt says that:

Holy Quran: 16: 50

"They fear their Lord above them, and they do what they are commanded"

This verse of Quran speaks about the lord i.e. ALLAH swt who is ABOVE us, not inside our hearts as claimed by the wajoodi sufia and their followers. When Quran itself is explaining the majesty of ALLAH swt and Quran itself is the witness of the status of ALLAH swt then how can those sufis and people who call themselves Muslims, can go against Quran?

In another place ALLAH swt says that the Ruh (jibrael a.s) and the angels ascend to ALLAH swt. Let us see the verse first.

Holy Quran: 70:3-4

"From All^ah, the Lord of the ways of ascent. The angels and the R^uh ascend to Him in a Day the measure wher is fifty thousand years."

This verse uses the word "ascend" which means to raise, to go up or to climb. So the verse makes it clear furthermore that the position of ALLAH swt is not in our hearts like the sufis preached and have preached but the status of ALLAH swt is distinct from HIS creation.

In another verse OF HOLY Quran, ALLAH swt describes HIS presence OVER us in these words;

Holy Quran: 67:16

"Do you feel secure that He, Who is over the heaven, will not cause the earth to sink with you, and then it should quake? "

This verse of Quran describes the presence of ALLAH swt over us, not another place bears HIS presence as described by many wajoodi scholars.

But this is right to say that ALLAH swt looks over us and HE knows what we are doing because He is our creator. In the following verses, ALLAH swt has described this thing very beautifully.

Holy Quran: 67: 13-14

"And whether you keep your talk secret or disclose it, verily, He is the All-Knower of what is in the breasts (of men). Should not He Who has created know? And He is the Most Kind and Courteous (to His slaves) All-Aware (of everything)."

First verse says that ALLAH swt knows whatever secrets people keep in their heart because HE is the knower of all since everything is created by HIS order and HIS wish. Second verse testifies it by asking that how come a creator remain unaware of HIS creation when everything is ready to change itself with HIS one command.

Hence with this brief comparative study, one can easily reject the wajoodi theory because it is totally contradicting to Quran and one can never be a Muslim if he rejects the Quran.

The Alternative To The Supernatural Is The Unnatural

The Alternative To The Supernatural Is The Unnatural
"Chesterton and the Romance of Orthodoxy" by William Oddie is a new biography of G.K. Chesterton, one of the most interesting Christain apologists of the Twentieth Century. John Chalberg reviews it in the current "Weekly Standard"..... In its broadest outline, Chesterton's conversion story was quite ordinary. Born into a Victorian family of much affection and minimal belief, he went through a stretch of teenage atheism before dabbling with the late Victorian version of liberal Christianity. It might have ended there had Chesterton's brain actually been the "lump of white fat" that one of his frustrated teachers dismissed it as being, and had the 1890s not been what they were.

Youthful atheist or no, his schoolboy friends remembered him as "looking for God." Such a search was not an easy one to undertake, much less complete, in a turn-of-the-century London given over to secularism, relativism, modernism, skepticism, Impressionism, and hyper-rationalism. It was, in Oddie's phrase, a time "much more like our own than we imagine." And yet, paradoxically, it was a perfect time for someone of Chesterton's cast of mind.

His starting point was not what he dubbed the "supernormal world" but the material world that seemed to point to the existence of a spiritual world, which in turn seemed to imply a creator. At the same time, those who denied the existence of a creator played an inadvertent role in his thinking as well: As the "isms" of the 1890s began to take hold, Chesterton began to observe that unbelievers were ceasing to believe even in "normal things." Without the supernatural, he concluded, man was left with the "unnatural." To put matters a bit differently, "We are all agnostics until we discover that agnosticism doesn't work." And for G. K. Chesterton, unbelief ultimately failed to work, both as a theological system and as a recipe for daily life.

In the end...Chesterton's "real transgression" was not so much believing that Christianity was true but believing that anything could be true..... [more]

Katie Coburn The Witch Of Talbot County Maryland

Katie Coburn The Witch Of Talbot County Maryland
I came across a story recently regarding an alleged witch in Talbot County, Maryland. I can find no mention of any court cases involving her or any information about when she allegedly lived. The only information is that she lived in the area of Plain Dealing Creek, so-called because the area was settled by Quakers who dealt plainly with the Indians of the area (as opposed to the Catholics, Anglicans, and everyone else who had no qualms about ripping them off). I did drive to the area and found that the creek is now surrounded by private homes and there did not appear to be a suitable place to get out and search around. There was an old church nearby, but it was in disrepair and appeared to be part of a private residence. If any locals would like to provide me with additional information or point me in a better direction I would appreciate it.

The main source for the story appears to be a book published in 1898, "Land of Legendary Lore: sketches of romance and reality on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake, "by Prentiss Ingraham.

According to Ingraham:

It was the ideal spot for spooks to haunt, while to enhance the dismalness of the old abode, it became the dwelling place of an old woman known as "Katie Coburn, the Witch." This "witch," the last of her kind known in Talbot, was old, deformed, hideous, and was guilty of diabolical ways and impish incantations to make herself feared. That she was dreaded by all, especially the children and negroes, there was no doubt, for the former were kept out of mischief by being threatened with her, and the latter felt that the sight of her was a hoodoo upon them. The negroes accordingly gave Witch Katie a very wide margin of room when they met her, and wore charms to counteract her spells, the "left hind foot of a rabbit, killed at the dark of the moou," doubtless being in great demand after a meeting with the "Witch of Plaindealing."

Not far from Plaindealing there lived a farmer whose cows pastured near the old burying-ground. One afternoon the boy whose duty it was to drive the cows home had to go near the lonely spot, and beheld to his amazement a stranger there ;-a man tall, stately, in the ancient garb like that worn by those whose portraits were in the deserted mansion. The man spoke to the boy, but the latter tied for home, told his story, and it was not believed. Again he saw the same man, and again, until at last he spoke to him, and for response saw him walk to a certain spot in the burying-ground and point downward, at the same time stamping his foot. This same performance was gone through with several evenings after, between the boy and the silent spectre in quaint old time costume.

On one occasion the spectre led the boy, now no longer afraid of him, into the old home and pointed to a portrait on the wall. The boy saw that the "ghost" was strangely like the portrait, dress and all. Then he was led back to the grave yard and the spectre pointed downward and stamped his foot, as before. As it was growing dark, and the cows had gone on ahead, the boy suddenly decided to go home, and he lost no time in doing so, his parents again laughing at his story. But then came the rumor that "Witch Katie" had not only disappeared from Plaindealing, but also from the country. The boy had not seen her since the coming of the quaint man of the grave-yard.

A similar version of the story is told in an 1876 edition of "McBride's Magazine."

According to "McBride's":

It [Plain Dealing] was the very place for a first-class ghost story, and its fitness was heightened by the residence on the premises of Katie Coburn, the last witch of Talbot. This poor old creature, lonely, deformed, repulsively ugly and wretchedly poor, was a terror to negroes and children far and near, who had marvelous tales of her impish ways and diabolical cantrips. It seems reasonable to think that at least part of the legend is true. A deformed woman may have lived in the area and some, especially the young and uneducated, may have believed that she was a witch. Whether or not she actually was or really wanted others to think that is anyone's guess. But as I argued in Justice At Salem: Reexamining The Witch Trials, there could be certain advantages to having other people think that you were a witch. Others might think twice about harming or taking advantage of you because they fear your supernatural ability to seek revenge. For a poor defenseless woman who no power in her society, this could have been her only means of self-defense against the the unthinking rabble.

Left Behind Ufos And The Rapture

Left Behind Ufos And The Rapture
THE HOLY BIBLE SUGGESTS THAT THIS IS A PREVIEW OF THINGS TO COME. ADDITIONAL GREEK AND HEBREW TRANSLATIONS ARE FORTHCOMING... Updated August 24, 2006

By Chris Montgomery

The rapture. Left behind. These are key words that are very popular right now. Millions have heard of these words mentioned recently, but few understand what they actually mean.

http://www.biblegateway.com/

The rapture is explained in 1st and 2nd Thessalonians, which can be found in the New Testament of the HOLY BIBLE. Thessalonians was a letter written by the Apostle Paul to the Christians in Thessalonica. These letters explain in detail the events leading up to Christ's return. According to some theologians, it will be a period of 7 years. Following the tribulation of years, Christ will come again at Armageddon in the final battle of Good versus Evil. The events and signs leading up to the rapture can be found in II Thessalonians.

THESSALLONICA, FIRST CENTURY A.D.

The Thessalonians were awaiting the immediate return of Jesus Christ. His return was not immediate, however. This was causing some societal problems for the early Christians there. So Paul spelled it out for them in this epistle, or letter of Paul to the Thessalonians.

PAULS CONVERSION

The Apostle Paul had an encounter with Christ. The Apostle said that Christ appeared to him in an effulgent, flying object. He said that he heard a buzzing sound, which is a characteristic of UFO events. It was this close encounter that made Paul an Apostle. (See the Interrupted Journey in UFO Prophecy http://www.uforc.com/research/page37.html)

Both Christ and Paul talked about these events in the New Testament of the HOLY BIBLE. There were other prophets throughout the "Old Testament" of the BIBLE that do, including the prophet Malachi and Daniel. The Great Tribulation period is a time when there shall be great suffering upon the earth. Many theologians believe that the rapture will occur in direct relation to the Great Tribulation. Although it is understood that "There shall be tribulation on the earth..." this does not necessarily refer to the Great Tribulation.

The Holy Bible does specify that there will be periods of tribulation on the earth throughout recorded history but there will be one period in particular, which separate this event from all the others. Some believe that the rapture will occur before the Great Tribulation, or pre-tribulation. Many believe that the rapture is going to happen during the tribulation, or mid-tribulation. The final group believes that no one will be immune from the judgments of neither God nor His wrath. If the rapture occurred at that time it would be called a post tribulation. More on the rapture hypothesis and UFOs can be found at http://www.uforc.com/research/page33.html

I am a pre-tribulationist. I believe that Christ will return to snatch His people and only His people from the earth just before the Great Tribulation. God always abides by the covenants that he makes. I say this knowing that there is great suffering on the earth right now, which rivals anything that we have encountered throughout the historic record. Why will all others be left behind?

We can divide the prophecy of the UFO Bible future surrounding the rapture into distinctive categories, which goes something like this:

THE GREAT APOSTACY, OR "FALLING AWAY"

Called the great and notable day of the Lord, it shall be earmarked with signs in the heavens above and the earth below. Jesus will return for his followers "like a thief in the night." (Matthew 24:42-44). Many theologians believe that He is going to do it this way, because if everyone knew when He would return, they could live riotously until just before His return to sober-up and ready themselves for His return for His holy ones. If they knew at what time the thief would come, they would lie in wait for him. Other theologians postulate that the evil forces would try to thwart their Holy departure. (See II Thessalonians chapter 2).

THE RAPTURE;

Christ told of the rapture of His believers, both the quick (living) and the dead. The graves shall open first. Christ uses symbols, like an alchemist's formula. UFOs are the signs in the heavens. They are here in great numbers amassed on the border of our time and theirs. The UFO occupants, or good angels, will be the "eagles" described in II Thessalonians. Christ said, "Where the body is, there the eagles shall be gathered together." The body is the body of Christ. The living will follow the raising of the dead, where believers in Christ will be caught up or snatched away as described in the Greek translation from the word "Harpadzo" This will be the ascent of the living in the air. They shall be changed, "In a moment or a twinkling of an eye." In other words those that are raptured will leave no trace. This serves a two-fold purpose. First it makes for a quick departure as described by Christ "like a thief in the night" and secondly, the impurities of the flesh shall be seperated from their spirit when they are changed, for sacred texts suggest that only the very pure and clean may enter into the Kingdom of Heaven.

I take this to mean that they will be given their new "Spiritual bodies" to accommodate their need to adapt to their new environment. I have always held a belief that the grays space suit, to protect them from the rigors of space flight and time travel. "And so they shall ever be with the Lord." (See Revelations 14:13)

THE GREAT TRIBULATION PERIOD (See Daniel's prophetic timetable)

Another reason the rapture precedes the great tribulation, is because it says that "the one who restrains" shall be taken away. This action is described as taking a lamp out of the darkness. The Bible is very specific about the body of Christ being the light of the world. The one who restrains, or "the great restrainer" is translated to mean the Holy Spirit. Christians, or followers of Jesus believe that the HS is part of the Holy Trinity, which includes Jesus and God the Father. With nothing keeping the forces of darkness apart, they will begin to self-destruct. (See II Thessalonians).

ARMAGEDDON AND THE SECOND COMING

The removal of angelic as well as benevolent spirits from the earth will be the beginning of the end for the inhabitants of Earth. The Bible says, "I shall not allow my holy ones to see corruption." In other words, those that have the mind of Christ will not be left behind. Those that convert afterwards, will be subject to the abuses and humiliation of the evil ones that remains. There will be those who have heard the message of Jesus Christ, but shrugged it off or didn't take it seriously.

The world will be plunged into darkness. The Bible says that "the sun shall be darkened and the moon shall turn into blood." One possible interpretation is that there will be some form of nuclear holocaust during this time. With several rogue nations actively persuing nuclear weapons and the technology to use them, this is becoming a clear and present danger! I am referring to what President Bush called "The axis of evil."

THE ANTICHRIST

Anti-christ is a term that the HOLY BIBLE referes to as anyone who opposes the teachings of Christ. This will be one sign during the period preceding the rapture. But there is also a person of distinction that the HOLY BIBLE will point out to you. The "son of perdition" or "the man of lawlessness" is mentioned in II Thessalonians. This person is known as the great anti-christ. He will arise and oppose all who align themselves with Jews and Christianity. The BIBLE is very specific and strongly suggests that this person will be on the scene at the time of the rapture and the Day of the Lord. There is a person who actually fits these criteria. His name is Osama Bin Ladin. Only time will tell if he is "The Antichrist."

THE COVENANT

Inhabitants of the earth shall not know God or his covenants so they will not see the road signs along the way. The Jews do not realize that the HOLY BIBLE paints a picture of two messiahs. One will be the suffering messiah (Jesus Christ who died) and the other is Jesus the conquering messiah. The first Jesus the sufferer left behind prophecies, covenants and other information that would prepare the Jews for what lie ahead. They await the conquering messiah and rely on the messianic visions contained in their Torah as their guide. They await the coming messiah, not the Jesus, which is spoken of throughout the Old and the New Testament.

Lawlessness shall reign supreme as well as anarchy. These and other signs are discussed in II Thessalonians of the HOLY BIBLE.

UFOs will figure prominently in the days to come. God will use his angels to pour out His judgments upon mankind. ALIEN EJECTA: UFOs & The Fourth Seal

http://www.uforc.com/religion/page40.html

All of this will lead up to the final and greatest battle of all time, the battle on the plains of Megiddo. God will keep his covenant with the people of Israel. He will come as Jesus, riding a UFO into battle. The opposing army's of the world, shall be eliminated rather quickly, having nothing comparable to use in their defense. The HOLY BIBLE describes it as a place of desolation following the battle, where predatory creatures shall feast on their flesh for years. Christ begins his reign for a thousand years, in the temple prepared for Him.

THE NEW MILLENIUM-THE NEW JERUSALEM

Christ and His UFO occupants will settle the earth in the "New Jerusalem." This flying object will dwarf any conceived by man and could literally cover a third of the continent of America. It shall reach from the ground to the sky. Its base will be in Israel. See "Suncruisers," The New Jerusalem at http://www.angelfire.com/wa/UFO/page13.html

Necronomicon

Necronomicon
(Excepted from "by Kalyn Tranquilson:)

Comments on the Necronomicon

The Necronomicon (by "Simon") has little or nothing to do with authentic Babylonian -- Akkadian or Sumerian -- ritual or magical practices.
However, some comments about the text "edited" by Simon might be in order.

First of all, it is clear that Simon had access to a wide variety of mythological materials derived from the Cuneiform culture. I am not convinced that this text had an earlier history before it's copyright date, but even by the early years of this century several of the important texts of the Mesopotamian corpus were becoming available. As evident from his bibliographies and assorted references, Simon had access to some of these works. But he also had a point to prove, and an agenda which
distorted the information he provides. His work suffers from a total lack of acknowledgment of the difference between the Akkadian and Sumerian terms and names. He also makes some extremely untenable historical
assertions, such as that the Surmerian language is "closely allied to that of the Aryan race, having in fact many words identical to that of Sanskrit (and it is said, to Chinese.)" [p.xviii]

A detailed analysis follows:

- The Introductory Materials (p.vii - lvi) -

This is the only section Simon claims as his own; it is a hodgepodge of information of various qualities of accuracy. On the whole, his
Mesopotamian references suffer from a lack of responsible checking. Simon appears to be a person who had a good idea (the Sumerian and Akkadian material was essentially unknown outside of a very limited scholastic community until very recently), but was unwilling to do the work to do it right, and was afraid to take direct credit. An example of the naivet of his work can be seen in the massive jumps from culture to culture. Yet at the same time he provides some interesting, perhaps even useful,
information on Sumerian terms (see p.xlix). His most glaring problem is his linguistic jumps. As one example among many, his equation of
Lovecraft's deity Cthulhu (derived from the Greek 'cthone') to the
Sumerians through the name of Ereskigal's city Kutha: thus, he says, KUTHA-LU [sic] means "man of Kutha": the proper term in Sumerian would be rendered LU-KUTHA. He also makes a connection between Kutha and Kutu, two completely different cities and terms, and between Kutha, the ABSU (Enki's realm), the NAR MARRATU (which is the marshy area at the junction between the Persian Gulf and the three rivers) and the Greek 'abyss'. While there is something that can be said about the ABSU and the Abyss -- both being the dark preformative world which exists alongside the mundane world, however, the Abyss is simply a void which is total and independent, whereas the ABSU is a real realm located between the Earth and the
Netherworld. The Sumerians knew the difference. Kutha and NAR MARRATU are concrete geographical entities -- although Kutha, being the city of Ereskigal, might be said to have a gateway to the Netherworld.

- Of the Zonei and their Attributes - (p.17-33)

This is an interesting mixture of original (Babylonian) material and who knows what. The deities' association with specific numbers is real and are a few of their descriptions. The seals are hilarious; at least, they bear no resemblance to anything I've ever encountered.

- The Book of the Entrance and of the Walking - (p35-49)

This chapter is basically garbage, even though the attribution of the seven earths, the seven levels and the seven heavens is a known feature of Babylonian systems; I do not believe that Simon actually derived this from any authentic source. Remember that the most famous ziggurat in
Mesopotamia was in Babylon (the Tower of Babel) which, it so happens, has seven stories. It's obvious that from very early on the Mesopotamians had a special reverence for the number seven. The early attribution of the seven-pointed star as the "Star of Babylon" was an early adaptation of this in Western Occult tradition. Simon could have easily picked up any of several scholarly accounts of religion in Babylon for this source.

- The Incantations of the Gates - (p.51-61)

Some of these invocations sound "familiar" and could possibly be hymns from various periods. I am still looking for the original materials, because if they are actual they may be useful. However, the language of his given translations is hardly accurate and the ABRACADABRA phrases at the end of the invocations are garbage.

- The Conjurations of the Fire God - (p.63-65)

Again it sounds close except for the abracadabra bit.

- The Conjuration of the Watcher - (p.67-73)

Forget it! Pure fiction...

-The Maklu Text- (p.75-92)

First of all, again ignore all of the abracadabra stuff; however, it is an interesting piece in this book. There is in fact a lexical series called the 'maqlu'; there are also several exorcism rites (the most common being the 'uttukku lemnuti') and you will find that in the material provided in this book there are one or two texts, incantations, etc. which appear to be included in sections of Simon's 'maklu" text -- such as the Conjuration Against the Seven Liers-in-Wait (p.79). But these are texts from separate sources and Simon has lumped them together into one "text". In general I do not trust Simon (obviously). I am following through and trying to find all of the originals.

- The Book Of Calling - (p.93-120)

Mostly mumbo-jumbo, especially his "Invocation of the Gates" -- the order is European, and late European at that! However, on page 111 he reproduces a shortened version of a verifiable text (text KAR 61, edited by Biggs TCS II (1967):70ff)

- The Book Of The Fifty Names - (p.121-150)

The names are derived from the end of the 'Enuma Elis', but the commentary is not. Also be careful with the transcriptions of the names into English lettering; I recommend if you want to know the Fifty Names of Marduk, see Alexander Heidel's book" Babylonian "- The Magan Text - (p.151-180)

Maggan is the Iranian coast of the Straits of Hormuz, and perhaps the land of the Harrapan civilization; however, it has nothing to do with the content of the text which is presented. This is a bad translation of the beginning of the 'Enuma Elis' (see Heidel's book). Section IV (166-180)
"Of The Sleep Of Ishtar" is a rather amusing adaptation of the Descent of Istar (or Inana) myth.

- The Urilla Text - (p.181-202)

Very interesting and imaginative, but...

- The Testimony Of The Mad Arab - (in two parts, p.3-16 & 203-218)

Who knows, but with Simon's batting average so far, it seems unreliable to me.

All of the above is not to say that Simon's "or it's
sequel
" Necronomicon "is not interesting reading; nor is
it to say that it cannot be used as a magical grimoire, since anything can be so used if you're capable of investing it with power. But it is the product of an imaginative distortion of ancient materials by a modern individual. It is not an authentic system or text of Babylonian, Sumerian or Akkadian ritual or magical practices.

Mercury Retrograde - chances are you may have already heard of it. For increasingly, even the most skeptical are debating the effects of this mysterious sounding phenomenon that could be said to be the ghost in the machine of our efficient, smooth-running society. Mercury does not actually stop in the heavens and go backward, of course - it just appears that way to those on Earth who are observing its motions. This celestial optical illusion occurs whenever Mercury, the nearest planet to the Sun, begins to round the bend in its orbit and swing closer to Earth. Thus, from Earth's position, Mercury appears to be moving backwards against the sky.

But what exactly "is "Mercury Retrograde - those cycles that cause even nonastrologers to cancel plans, and stall important decisions, and put life on hold? Three or four times a year the planet Mercury appears to slow down and reverse direction. Like a car that shifts into reverse and moves backward over a stretch of road it has just covered, the planet seems to retrace a section of its pathway around the Sun. It than shofts forward, moving 'direct' again until it returns to its original strting point. At this stage it begins to move more quickly along its orbit until several months later, when it repeats the entire process all over again. Each peiod of time Mercury is retrograde lasts approximately three weeks.

This astrological event that is said to throw schedules off-kilter, derail the best-laid plans, cast doubt on cherished dreams, stir misunderstandings and doubt in personal relationships, make computers malfunction and cars break down is becoming more and more well-known. Many in business, technology and the media want to learn more about avoiding the pitfalls and obstacles that often come with this cycle. For while most people's knowledge of astrology doesn't extend beyond reading their Sun sign forecast in the daily newspapers, growing numbers now take serious notice of this triannual event.

Because Mercury retrograde cycles are shorter and occur more frequently, astrologers say that it's effects is more pronounced than those of other planets when they go retrograde. And because astrological tradition guves the planet Mercury 'rulership' over the sphere of life that includes commerce, trade, transportation, and communication - activities that affect virtually everyone - its influence is even more noticable. Like the stick in the spoke of the wheel that throws a cart off course, Mercury's reversal can often mean setbacks, obstructions, misunderstandings, and sudden, unexplained 'out-of-blue' events.

Yet for all the confusion that surrounds Mercury retrograde, it contains within it a vein of gold - if only we would mine it for its true worth. By working "with "the slower pace of Mercury retrograde, rather than against it, we can allow ourselves to step outside the narrow framework of ordinary reality and see our lives from a wider perspective. Most astrologers, for instance, agree that it is a cosmically timed period to understake any activity with the prefix "re- "such as redo, reevaluate, revise, rethink, review, reconsider, reassess. Whether restoring an antique, reordering a messy closet, rewriting a business proposal or article, reflecting upon a relationship, revisiting old friends, or taking time out to hike or laugh over a glass of wine. Mercury retrograde is all about loosening the grip of everyday demands and responsibilities in order to experience life more deeply. It is about finding pleasure in the old familiar, and timeless, rather than the new and untried.

A message here can be to remember there are times in life when the wisest course of action is to simply let go and savor things just as they are. Thus, rather than push forward, it is a time to "retreat, "if possible, and step back from the usual hurriedm, harried way of doing things. It is a time "reflect "in solitude on what has gone on in the months preceding Mercury retrograde, and to "reconnect " with one's soul. Following these steps makes it possible to emerge from the peiod of Mercury retrograde refreshed and "renewed "in spirit.

We'Moon has this advice about Mercury Retrograde - "Mercury, planetary muse and mentor of our mental and communicative lives, appears to reverse its course three or four times a year. We may benefit from less stress when it retrogrades by making allowances for a symbolic 'sleep cycle'. These peiods give us permission to pause and go back over familiar territory, reflecting and giving second thoughts to dropped projects or miscommunications. Breakdowns can help us attend ato the safety of mechanical and mobility modes. It's time to 'recall the now' of the past and pay attention to underlying issues. Leave matters that lock in future commitments until Mercury goes direct.

For this time of period of Mercury retrograde - from December 26th until January 15th, 2010, use fun flights of the mind while spinning your wheels waiting for serious business to begin."

THE WREN

One of the smallest birds, the Wren has long been associated with Witchcraftand Paganism, both to its determent and benefit.

On St. Stephen's Day, 26th of December, a ritual known as 'Hunting the Wren' was enacted. The poor Wren was hunted, killed, decorated and paraded through the streets to bring good fortune to the people of the town. In some areas it was simply kept caged for the remaining 12 days of Christmas and in others it was decorated with ribbons and allowed to fly free.

It is thought by some that this treatment of the Wren was to offset the Pagan associations of the bird. On the positive side, folklore has long held the Wren to be a lucky bird: a Wren's feather falling on you indicated a long and prosperous life, to have one in your garden indicates a happy home and just to hear its song was considered lucky.

Perhaps surprisingly some families still re-enact Hunting the Wren as part of the season's festivities, only in this case the Wren in question is a paper one! A small bird shape is cut out of paper and painted. It is then secreted somewhere in the house. At dusk the children are sent to hunt the Wren. The first to find her is given the Wren to place in their room.
